Rhinoplasty is another word for nose surgery or a nose job. It is a very safe and very popular procedure today. Nasal surgery can provide people with better breathing, as well as a more attractive and proportional silhouette, with the correction of small bridges, large bridges, and unshapely nose tips.

If you are considering rhinoplasty, here are a few common questions you may have and their answers.

Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Most healthy people over the age of 16 or so are good candidates. Those who have breathing problems due to misshapen noses can greatly benefit from nose surgery, and those who want to change the shape of their profile and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure are good candidates.

What types of anesthesia are used?

Either general or local anesthesia is available and the one that is used is usually chosen based on the preferences of the patients and the surgeons. If you would definitely prefer to be put under while your surgery is performed, you should discuss that option with your surgeon.

How is Rhinoplasty Performed?

The most common technique involves making small incisions inside the nasal passage to separate the bone from the cartilage. Then the surgeon can reshape the bridge or the tip as needed, replace the skin and sew it together again with sutures. To increase the height of a bridge, surgeons will typically insert a synthetic bridge piece and or also use an inserts for tips if widening is desired.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

There will be some swelling and bruising. You may need to take a break from your regular activities like work and school, for about a week or more. You will have a splint or bandage covering your nose for a few days immediately after the rhinoplasty and your nasal passages may even be packed with materials to help keep their shape.

The swelling and bruising will decrease gradually over time, and may take several weeks to a few months, but fortunately when the swelling goes down, the results of the rhinoplasty are permanent. You may be instructed to use ice to decrease the swelling. Pain and discomfort is generally managed with pain killers prescribed by your doctor.

What are the Risks of Nose Surgery?

While rhinoplasty is considered one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures there are a few, rare risks. These include infection at the incision site or inside the nose, some heavy bleeding, or possible negative reactions to the type of anesthesia used. Make sure you discuss any concerns in depth with your surgeon before going ahead with the procedure.

How often do people need nose job revisions?

If you choose a well qualified surgeon, you are not likely to need a revision. While there is no guarantee about the results of your surgery, you can increase your likelihood of success by choosing a board certified doctor who has all the proper credentials and licensing and plenty of experience in the field.

There may be some minor adjustments to be made after an initial rhinoplasty and that can require a revision. A nose job can help you get the look you have always wanted, increase your self confidence, and improve your ability to breathe. Talk to your surgeon to find out if you are a good candidate for this popular procedure.
