Having a new deck built can be very exciting, but there are different important things to consider before you begin. If you're not a DIY kind of person or just don't have the time, you'll want to hire a contractor. This can be as complicated as trying to build it yourself if you don't know how to go about hiring a good reliable deck contractor.

Deck Contractors

Deck contractors are professionals in all aspects of deck building or rebuilding whether it be replacing broken railings, building a new deck railing system or building an entirely new deck for you. Choosing the right deck contractor takes time and consideration, more so if you have little or no experience in hiring and working with contractors. Before you hire one specific contractor, you'll need to get estimates from the various contractors.

Decide What You Want

Before you can even think about speaking with a contractor, you need to know what type of deck you want as well as how much you can afford to spend. Knowing how much you have to spend is simple enough, but deciding on what you want in a deck may take a little longer. Look around your neighborhood at other people's decks that you like. If you find particular decks that you like, inquire as to who their contractor was. Another option is to get some magazines that specialize in home building or outdoor furniture and see if they offer something you like. Many of these magazines will break down exactly what materials and how much you'll need for your deck. This can prove to be quite helpful, as it will give you a chance to price the materials to see what the parts will cost you at various stores.

Finding the Right Deck Contractor

Once you've found some good contractors, call them and schedule an appointment so they can come to your home and look at the site where you'll want the deck built. Show them what you want for a deck and have them give you a written estimate so you can begin comparing estimates. Try to stay with contractors that have at least three years experience. This usually guarantees that the builder will give a warranty with their work. Don't assume this, however. Always ask if they guarantee their work and for how long.

Make sure they have a contractor's license and ask to see the license. This is important so in case something happens, you can avoid legal liabilities. A licensed contractor will also have insurance that will cover workman's compensation and general liability. Before you hire any contractor, ask to see the policy to ensure that it is paid up to date. References are also important, but only if you check on them. Get a firm quote from the contractor stating what the final cost will be as well as a time schedule for the completion date. If possible, have them set milestones of how much they can get done in a certain time period.

Everything that you want from deck furniture to clean up of the job site should be included in the final contract you and the contractor sign. If you have to have any permits, get them before the job begins and give a copy to the contractor. If you're organized from beginning to end, you will wind up with a beautiful deck built on schedule for an agreeable price.
