Continuum can be defined as "anything that goes through a gradual transformation without any abrupt changes along the way" What is it that is going through the gradual transformation in the case of our human existence? Mind.

I am going to present some concepts here that many would say cannot be substantiated from where we sit here and now in this physical world. I say that you can and that I have. Aside from some direct experience I will also draw on the central theme that many of the world's religions have in common once you look past the dogma.

That theme is this: that there is a higher power descending into the material world for its own purpose. It is singular at its highest manifestation and individualized within each of us.

In Quantum Physics there is a theory that this Universal Consciousness is manifested as the Wave Function of Quantum Mechanics. I will leave it to you to do your own research on this.

For the purposes of this book I am going to call this power "Higher Mind". Terms used by others might include true self, higher self, spirit, soul, Atman, Holy Ghost, God and so on. Higher Mind at its highest form is Universal Consciousness, that which is aware and intelligent by a set of laws. As it descends it becomes more expressive in successive stages until it is associated with and partially resides in a physical form. The lower part of Higher Mind contains a library of our experiences; everything we have done is stored there for later access.

When considering how information can be stored in a non-physical vessel it is better to think in terms of grades of physical matter, not physical and non-physical. Just as information is stored in our brains with patterns that emerge when stimulated electro-chemically so can information be stored in finer grades of matter like radio waves carrying information through the air. Another useful analogy is that of standing vibration. When a pan of water is vibrated constantly a particular frequency a pattern will form. Each time you vibrate that pan of water at the same frequency, all else remaining equal, you should be able to identify the frequency by looking at the pattern in the water.

The mental processes that are carried out within our physical system is what I will call "Local Mind". Local Mind is comprised of the subconscious component, where Higher Mind and Local Mind intersect and normal consciousness, where our daily thinking occurs. The brain is the material that is used to hold our Local Mind thoughts

Local mind generates the thoughts that affect change in our physical bodies. This is an important fact to remember, all thoughts affect some kind of physical change in the body, some very small and sometimes very obvious. Emotion can be described as "thought expressed in the body".

So, now the continuum can be described as "the transformation of Higher Mind into the individualized Local Mind within the bounds of our physical human system". The system is seamless.

I am not going to ask you to take this on faith, it can be directly experienced. The article, The Mind/Body Continuum Part 2, continues this discussion around the difference between Higher Mind and Local Mind and how to experience Higher Mind directly.
