For some time now, several manufactures have been making one piece threaded rod hanger screws for supporting threaded rod from the ceiling. These hangers are basically a large screw with a rod coupler built on. These rod hanger assemblies are fast, economical and easy to install and most have the full compliment of FM and UL listings.

This article will cover how to install Sammy Screws from the floor using a tool called a Lagmaster plus. This tool is usually consists of two poles, an inner and an outer pole, held together with a hitch pin that allows for the two sections to extend to go from 6’ to 12’. On one end you will find a hex shank to chuck into a cordless drill, and the other end will have a receptacle to accommodate the threaded rod hanger.

The first step in using the lagmaster plus it to decide which Sammy Screw you will use You will need to select the correct type of Sammy Screw for your application. If you are going into wood, you will want to consider if there is a layer of drywall or even two so you can select a screw that will get in an inch or so. If you are going into metal, make sure you are using the right screw to match the metal. Some of the self drilling screw work well in thin gage metal others will work better in heavier metal These are important things to consider to make sure you are not exceeding safe working loads. You will be able to choose from Sammy Screws able to handle ¼”, 3/8” and ½” rod although some tools may not handle the ½” rod.

The next step is to set the pole tool to the proper length. Many times the 6’ length is ideal but you can extend the pole in foot increments, just by removing the hitch pin, sliding the inner sleeve out and replacing the hitch pin. The tool will extend out to 12’ giving you a reach of around 18’. Longer lag pole tools are available including models that extend from 8’-24’.

Once you have your pole length set, attach a ½” cordless drill to the end of the pole. Most 14 volt tools today will drive the tool just fine, but an 18 volt may be in order if you are driving a lot of longer rod hanger screws.

Now, cut your threaded rod to length and screw it onto the threaded rod hanger screw. You may want to use a wrench and channel locks to snug the rod to the screw. Slide the threaded rod down the center of the lag pole until the rod hanger screw seats into the driver. You will note the driver is recessed. The purpose of the is to keep you from snapping the head off the rod hanger screw. It will simply slip off the screw when it is set deep enough.

Carefully raise the tool to the work surface. Your may concern will likely be not damaging any ceiling grid if it is in place or ramming the tool into any lights. Hold the screw against the surface and pull the trigger, slowly at first just like you were setting the rod hanger screw with a socket. You will notice the whole shaft spins, it really is just an extra long socket. Spin the drill until the Sammy Screw sets and pull the pole down from the surface.

You now have your threaded rod exposed, ready to hang your pipe hanger or whatever fixture you need to hang.
