Networking with peers in the industry always helps when it comes to career shifts. Many good job offers are routed through references. Here are a few tips on connecting to friends to reap the benefits.

As a mid career professional you may be tired of your present job. You might also be looking for a change. You might even be feeling lonely in the absence of interaction with peers. It would provide you some consolation to know that there are several others like you who are looking for a change.

By talking with them, you might gain an insight into your problem, as well as theirs. This could help you find a solution to your own problem. This may also guide you to make a successful switch to a more satisfying career solution. Yes, of course, you should also talk to peers in other industries as well.

Here are 7 primary reasons why you must maintain contact with mid career professionals like yourself:

1) How do they handle it?

When you talk with other midpros, you may learn that they face similar problems as you do. You will also learn how they handle their problems. You will come to know about solutions if any that they have devised, or are in the process of devising. Such interaction may also help you find solutions to your own problems. But, you may have to start your own process to resolve them.

2) Chance to air you feelings:

Sharing your concerns with others like you gives you an opportunity to vent your feelings. This process in itself is a big relief. You may return to your job, relaxed, and with a better focus on things. That could help you find the courage to break the shackles.

3) What's happening in other fields?

You must talk to and maintain contact with professionals from different industries. This way you can familiarize yourself with current job trends and opportunities in those industries. You will also learn about the working environment in those other industries.

4) Migrate to different areas

Exposure to your peer group in other industries may also help you find something appealing in those industries. Then, you may look for an opportune moment to make a switch from your present job. Or you may decide that you need a new degree before you make such a switch. As a mid career professional, you may want to switch from a technical to a non technical field, or vice versa. You may even decide to choose a job of non regular timings to suit your personal needs.

5) Develop existing capabilities

You might have certain talents, which you, or others around you, have not recognized so far. Interacting with other mid career professionals like you may help identify this potential in you. Once such aptitude becomes known, you can find ways to develop this to your advantage.

6) Ways to switch careers

You may learn if and how others have changed careers. You will also learn if the switch has been easy or difficult. A peek into the challenges they faced adds to your perspective. You could learn how they managed to adapt to their new surroundings. You may also learn to make the transition easier for yourself. As a seasoned professional you may know that many good opportunities come through references. Peer network is all about that. So it helps to keep connected.

7) Adopt something new

If nothing else, you will at least find how others have used their creative potential to help tide over difficult situations. This may take the form of exhibiting their creativity, like art, writing, or even a volunteer service.

Talking with mid career professionals like you will always help you. Maintaining contact with people in similar situations may open a shut window for you.
