Though digital photography has a lot of advantages, the fact that you no longer have to worry about running out of film makes you end up with hundreds of photos that are all good except for some small faults that need to be corrected. These may include the red eyes in most of the photos done at night or a picture being too dark or overexposed. There are many professional photo editors available, but if you're an amateur photographer just like most people, you probably don't want to spend between $50-$300 on one. Fortunately there are a lot of good photo editing applications available for free that offer more options than you need. Here are a few you can choose from.

FxFoto

This is the one of highest rated free photo editor on downloads.com, a website hosted by CNET. It includes all of the tools that a casual photographer regularly needs. The standard edition of this software has options like removing red eyes, enhancing lighting, image adjustment, blemish correction, cropping, smoothing, text enhancement and photo frames. Of course, it also includes basic stuff like saving and renaming standard photo files. The deluxe version of FxFoto has more advanced options including scrapbook layout, slide shows, collages and many others.

Photozing Album Express

Photozing Album Express would another great pick of a photo editing application. This software allows you to easily transfer photos from your PC to the camera and organize them in any way you want. Even its automatic 'quick fix' option enables you to set the brightness and contrast to the optimum level. You also have a very easy to use red eye removal tool. The fact that it has a very intuitive interface make it a great pick for beginner PC users too. It also saves the original image so it is very easy to undo in case you don't like how the picture turned out like after several corrections. It is compatible with the Windows XP and Vista operating systems.

Pixresizer 2.3.0

This is a great application to help you quickly change the size of your photos, whether it is just one image or one hundred. You have probably come across such problems as sending a photo to friends and relatives and them being unable to see it because the size or resolution were just too large. Pixresize 2.3.0 enable you to quickly resize one or a group of selected photos and optimize them for web or email use. The resized images are saved to a separate folder so you don't have to worry about losing the originals by mistakes. This program also lets you convert an image into a different file format. It is so practical and easy to use that it should be included with any digital camera you purchase.

As you can see, there are many free photo editing applications you can choose from. These are just a few popular picks. No matter what you are planning to do with your photos, from online scrapbooks to digital photo albums and slide shows, you can rest assured that there's a program out there that does just that. However, make sure you download it from a reputable source so you won't get viruses.
