Peter Opsvik has been designing furniture for about 30 years. His renowned piece of work is the balance chair. His creativity exhibits the middle path between the 'rational' and the 'emotional'. The construction of industrial products is based on the rational design and the emotional objects are made by the craftsmen traditionally.
Opsvik carried out all his design works with a purpose in mind. The best example is the Garden range, which appears more like a tree than a chair. He designed it with an intention to send a signal to any person who looks at it. The purpose behind the design was to just express the opinions of a designer about the etiquette and rules of sitting and nothing more than that. Opsvik used a variety of features in the chair that made the user to take a number of positions. This was an immediate solution invented by him, when the rest of the designers were unable to find the perfect sitting position. This invention improved the postures of the back, hip and the legs.

One of the theories of Opsvik which is concerned about the movement is under research, after a flaw was recognized in it. There after Opsvik provided backrest to all his models. The addition of the backrest simplified the adoption of the various postures.

Varier Furniture is renowned for its variety of seating that provides us with the comfort. Opsvik's of the works is the"Penguin Chair", which is the Varier's latest release. This is a perfect kitchen or a dining room furniture set. The Penguin chairs are built with transverse steel tubes. The chair is not fixed in place, which allows the chair to roll forwards and backwards. This set is available in the following colors: ice blue, midnight black, and ice white. The seats are also provided with chrome and cushions.

The works of Opsvik include the Gravity balans, which is also Varier product designed in the year 1983. Opsvik quotes that the Gravity balans chair is not jus a seating, but it is a way of life. These single chairs were designed for both resting and as well perform other activities.

Pendulum, a product of Varier designed by Opsvik in the year 1983 was a seating provision around the kitchen table. The pendulum concept of seating allows the chair to follow according to the body’s postures.

Variable balans was brought to the market in the year 1979 by Varier. As the name indicates, the chair offers movement and variation to the user. The chair is provided with two separate pads, to switch the leg positions from time to time.

Multi balans was introduced by Varier in the year 1981. This chair was designed for the persons suffering from back problems. The patients recovering from the back surgery could begin to sit immediately after the surgery, when the chair was set to a steep angle.

The Varier introduced Thatsit balans in the year 1992, which was also a work of Opsvik.

It was provided with a curved runner, which acted as medium for the movement and variation for the user at his workplace. The chair can be adopted only by the people of heights 155 cm and above. On the whole Peter Opsvik’s contribution was a significant one in the development of the Modern furniture system.
