Socializing is a big part of human behavior. Many friends and family members seem only to get together during key holidays or for the larger celebrations. But there is no law that says you can celebrate a regular Friday night with those you love. There is no reason needed to throw the best kind of party – a dinner party. Many amateur cooks would love to show off their kitchen skills and impress their friends or work associates. Even those who are not budding chefs can pull together a dinner party with not much expense.

The Success is in the Planning

Planning a dinner party does take some planning, starting with the party date. You need to decide if your celebration is going to be casual or formal. You may choose to throw a backyard patio dinner for close friends or you may be interested in a finer dining experience. Whatever the situation, you will need to make sure you have enough room to seat your guests once a list has been established. Your guests should be given at least a week’s notice so they can make their own plans to attend. Make sure you tell your guests what kind of dinner party to expect. More formal occasions may require a longer notice time, especially if formal dress is intended.

Once the party style and any theme has been decided, you want to create your menu and your place setting plans. There are so many creative ideas that are simple yet can make a big impact on your guests. Research different ideas that you like and find which ideas match your planned celebration and fit within your budget. When planning the menu, keep your theme and decorative ideas in mind.

Jazz Up the Menu

Your menu can be anything you want it to be. Some people will have their own special recipes that their friends will want to have. Some people will go non-traditional and prepare a menu of more exotic foods. Some people will take a special class to learn how to prepare something totally unexpected. The menu is a great way to express your own personality and impress your guests at the same time. Your menu plans should also include the drinks, appetizers, and desserts.

Make a Preparation Timeline

After your menu is set, you should plot out a timeline of all the preparation work that you can do ahead of the party in order to take some of the stress out of your actual day. In addition to all of the shopping, slicing and dicing vegetables can be completed before the dinner day and depending on what you plan to prepare, many other tasks can be taken care of beforehand. Obviously, you’ll want your dishes to be as fresh as possible to take pen to paper and set some goals and a trusty to-do list for the days leading up to the dinner party.

Remember the Point of the Party

You can have a lot of fun with a dinner party and can really become the envy of your friends by being a great hostess. The most important thing to remember on the day of the party as a hostess – have fun! If you spend too much time rushing around, fussing over guests, and cleaning up during the party, you will be missing out on the entire evening and it will be unlikely you’ll attempt another dinner party and you’re guests will likely feel uncomfortable as well. Remember to cherish the quality time with friends and family and don’t let anyone leave with an empty stomach.
