Candles are a special light that adds something to a romantic dinner or to the bedroom when romancing your spouse. The candle and the bed coverings can be coordinated. The other decorations in the bedroom could also match the color of the candle. The scent of a candle can also be matched to the bedroom colors: a green candle with a pine scent for instance or a peach scented candle with peach sheets.

A romance with candles has occurred throughout history as they have been part of religious ceremonies and today specials wedding candles are available. Lighting a fire in the fireplace and snuggling close to it in your favorite chair, with hot chocolate, a book, and a lit candle is a way of romancing yourself into a relaxed, comfortable evening.

The Jewish people light an evening Havdalah candle, which is part of their Sabbath ritual. The biblical metaphor for the Christian church is the bride and many churches light candles for various ceremonies.

Just as the word romance has different meanings like romance novel, romance literature, which is different than the romance novel, candles romance our spirits with their warmth, light, relaxing effect, and they are associated with our feelings of love, grief, and spirituality. They affect us in many ways. What is the birthday party, but a romance with the self? Part of our celebration of our day of birth is blowing out our birthday candles. Many times the rituals that involve candles are group related like weddings, birthdays, and other ceremonies. Sometimes it only involves the action and satisfaction of one person lighting a candle at dinnertime, though alone, or lighting candles before soaking in a hot perfumed bath.

Our sense of smell elicits different emotions. Just think of scents that you like and unpleasant ones and you get the picture. If you are trying to create a romantic evening with your spouse—remember the effects of different scents on men and women aren’t usually the same. Surveys suggest that men tend to like the fragrance of vanilla, which is a scent that soothes and nurtures. Many men like the smell of a cedar wood candle. Many women like pungent scents such as gardenias, jasmine and camellia.

One way to see which candle scents your spouse likes is to go on an outing to the candle store. Take note of the ones your spouse prefers. This may take some prompting, but a spontaneous response could be more revealing of his or her true likes and dislikes. This can be a fun and informative excursion that can help you create the romantic evening that you are visualizing.

Humankind’s romance with candles will be around as long as there are candles and people. People will always use candles as part of their various rituals. The association of various emotions with candles has a long history and isn’t going away. You can have a romantic evening with your spouse or soothe your body with a relaxing bath by candlelight anytime and keep the tradition going.
