What distinguishes Tiger Woods from most other golfers? Well, it is said that Tiger invested millions of hours in his practice, meticulously studying each and every body motion that goes into executing that perfect golf swing, before he acquired full control over his body. That is why he is one of the world's greatest and most learned golfers walking the face of the earth.

For outsiders the game of golf is just a test of patience and accuracy. Even though this is more or less true, what they are missing out is the immense physical strength necessary to play the sport properly at a competitive level. In order to execute a full golf swing, you need to have fluid control over your entire body so that you don't falter in any step, whether it is the putt, slice or drive.

As with other sports that involve a ball and bat like cricket, hurling or baseball, the foundation of your strike lies in your proper grip of the golf club. How and where you grip the golf club is a matter of private concern.

You have several types of grips at your discretion - the overlapping grip, the interlocking grip and the baseball grip - each dependent on the length of your fingers and the girth of the hand. The one you're most comfortable will also, with, practice enable you to deliver the greatest strength to the golf ball and enable the ball to cover the farthest mile.

Your physical strength is also an important determining factor when it comes selecting the right grip. The baseball grip is recommended for beginners.

When you are in almost mid flight, executing the golf swing, two things will make the most difference - the target line (the level at which the golf club is) and the stance line or the bodyline. You must keep your body straight, preventing the spine from bending but at the same time seeing that the body undergoes the proper round twist. And throughout the motion, you have to be conscious about your body's relation with the ball.

During the backswing, your head should undergo a natural slight head movement. While in downswing, in order to reinforce most of your strength on the ball, your head should be tilted a little downwards since the brain carries a sufficient amount of weight by itself. If the head is aligned to the line of impact, maximum force will be imparted to the golf ball on the underside.

The downswing power is derived from the angle between the club and wrists, not your hands. While you are taking the downswing, you should always try to keep your body in line. Maintain the angle and derive power from the rotation of the wrist. Take your downswing as slowly as possible when you are initially acquiring the tricks of the trade. Keep the left arm raised and straight and as far back as possible to drive the max force for hitting the ball.

Do not hit the ball, instead strike it. Most golfers go wrong while trying to execute this penultimate act of the swing and end up sending the ball in a wrong direction and at a much lesser pace and elevation. Try to executing the swing in one fluid body motion and initially develop this trait by employing short puts. In case of short putts, the strength required is much less, so one can focus rigorously on the technique of the motion.
