Road rage is one of the most, if not the most, dangerous things that causes accidents today. However, since the gas prices have gone up, have you noticed any changes in how Americans drive? In recent studies, it has been revealed that road rage is on the decline. Why is this? Simple. Because of the high cost of gas, more people have opted out of driving their personal vehicles. This has led to a massive amount of people leaving their cars parked in the driveway or garage and instead hitching a ride with a friend, co-worker or family member.

In some cases, people have even turned towards taking the bus or joining some sort of rideshare or carpooling service. It's all about saving money. With the economy on a landslide downwards, people are doing anything and everything they can. When gas was at its highest (over $4 a gallon), it cost me around $75 to fill up my Jeep. I had to fill up my jeep every single week though because I was commuting to work each day. Now imagine how much money that would add up to in a month for others who have to commute to work even further! It's ridiculous.

Another reason road rage has been on the decline is due to the fact that people are driving SLOWER. As it turns out, driving slower helps you save gas as does not following people so closely. When you follow another driver too closely, you are forced to apply your brakes prematurely and increase your chances of getting into an accident due to the fact that you are not allowing yourself either the room or the time to get into a defensive position should the person in front of you break suddenly.

There are plenty of other added benefits to reducing your speed on the roadways. For example, if you are concerned about the wear and tear put on your vehicle, then it's probably a good idea to reduce your speed on the roadways. A sure way to wear out your brakes is by applying them all the time. By following others too closely, you are forced to apply your brakes where you otherwise wouldn't have to (at least not nearly as often). Two of the biggest ways to wear out your brakes is by stopping short often as well as stopping short from a high rate of speed. Only good things can come from driving slower. You are not only making the lives of other people around you safer, but you are also making the lives of those who travel in your vehicle safer. Don't wait until it is too late. Most people will get into at least one semi-serious accident in their lifetime which will be their fault.

While driving, it is important to remember that driving is a privilege; not a right. It is also important to remember that while you are driving, you need to practice being a defensive driver. It will save you time, money as well as make you and others safer. Use your turn signals; obey posted speed limits; look both ways before making a turn of any sort. Observe the speed of those who are approaching your vehicle from behind. Approach lame green lights with caution.
