Many consider blinds as a relatively modern phenomenon in the world of interior design but this is a common misconception. Blinds have been used in many civilisations as a window covering, for instance, the ancient Chinese used bamboo blinds in their homes whilst the Persians also used them. The Venetian style of blind is believed to have come from the Persian lands, brought to the city of Venice by traders during the medieval period. Persia and China were not the only civilisations to use blinds, in Ancient Egypt they were also used and in their earliest form sheets were used to cover openings to keep the fierce heat of the desert at bay.

The interior designer today has many choices in terms of window coverings, not only in terms of style but also in terms of the materials used in their construction. Horizontal slats are probably the most common form of blind used today, particularly in office spaces and industrial buildings. These forms of window coverings are used due to the fact that they bring great levels of privacy, especially important in the business world. Typically in the business environment the materials used are aluminium and vinyl, as a minimalist way of covering windows.

In the home blinds are used somewhat differently, the horizontal slat varieties are still popular although rollers and shutters are also extensively used. Rollers are particularly popular in rooms where complete darkness is required; this could be a child's bedroom or even the bedroom of someone who works nights and has to sleep during the day. In terms of materials, while aluminium and vinyl are still extensively used in the domestic sphere, wood is a far more attractive material. Wood however does have limitations, for instance in rooms with high levels of humidity such as bathrooms and kitchens wood can warp, in these rooms it is usually more advisable to use faux wood blinds as modern manufacturing has meant that faux wood can be made to look like the real thing; without the disadvantages.

Blinds are used all over the world and today the consumer is spoilt for choice when it comes to styles and designs. For instance, blinds are now available in literally every colour of the rainbow ranging from sparkling reds to deep luxurious blues; the result is that no matter your decor it is possible to find a blind that will match and accompany a colour scheme. Colour is not the only stylistic option however; some companies are now giving customers a service that allows for images to be printed upon the blind. This image could be a photograph of a child or even a coastal vista; the choice is literally endless.

For those who want to gain an ethnic look to their homes there is the option to use materials such as bamboo or grass that will create a truly original design presence. It should be remembered however that when buying window coverings it is important to purchase a variety of different styles to suit the decor of various rooms. While it may work out cheaper to buy in bulk, this is rarely advisable as the look of the entire home can be easily spoilt when using wholesale design options; remember that individuality is a key component of interior planning.

Hopefully this article has given an idea of the options out there for those people deciding which window coverings to use in their home. Blinds are an elegant solution that allow the homeowner to create an original space full of stunning design aspects.
