Bodybuilding is not an “overnight” activity that would have you lifting small cars before your 30th birthday. For people who believe this dangerous misconception, only a few things would result from their early attempts in bodybuilding:

• Torn muscles or ligaments, or broken toes from accidentally dropping weights on their unguarded feet.

• Sore muscles due to too much strain on the first few sessions.

• Painful back muscles due to wrong posture during workout.

And so on. The problem with unguided beginners is that often, they think that the body is a can full of bodybuilding potential that can be let loose on the first few days of working out.

Scenario 1: Average Joe

The usual scenario is this- Average Joe signs up for a membership in the local gym, taking care not to sign up for a gym instructor or for a weight training class in that gym (even if it’s only once or twice a week). Average Joe feels good about his new membership, he buys all the things he think he will need: gym shoes, spandex gym clothes, face towels, high protein energy drinks, high protein energy bars, etc.

Everything seems bright for our Average Joe. He’s not learned enough about the human body and how it works when you apply resistance to it through exercise, but thinks that anything he does with weights will eventually lead to good results. Average Joe tightens his belt and steps into the otherworldly light of the gym, amazed at the physiques of the other bodybuilders there (who had probably been training for years) and decides that he too, will be part of this muscular group.

Alarm bells are sounding. Average Joe surveys the landscape: he sees dumbbells, barbells, weight-training machines, treadmills and stationary resistance machines. He decides to spend four hours in the gym, because he wants to try each and every one of the machines.

Average Joe doesn’t have any weight belts, doesn’t know any warm up exercises or cooling down exercises. All he knows is that if he throws everything he’s got into the every gym equipment he can reach, he will be as strong and as muscular as the folks he sees on television. And so Average Joe begins his grueling four-hour confrontation with heavy metal weights and unforgiving treadmills.

Average Joe survives the night. He actually feels good after throwing around metals nearly half his weight. He feels that he has achieved something. Average Joe comes home, excited to do more, and castigating himself for not getting that gym membership ages ago. At home, he drinks a liter of cold water and promptly drops off to a deep sleep.

The aftermath

The next day, Average Joe cannot move. He cannot move his arms, his legs, and his back. Everything is sore and throbbing from extreme exhaustion. Average Joe feels like he had been run over by a bulldozer.

In a week, Average Joe regains full use of his arms and legs. He doesn’t want to go to the gym anymore. This scenario is all too common- which is a clear warning to anyone who would be irresponsible enough to attempt bodybuilding with a systematic regimen in mind.
