Tendonitis is an inflammation of cords of tough, fibrous connective tissue called tendons. These tissue flex, stretch and are protected by a sheath. The tendon also acts like a rope that holds muscles to bones and can become inflamed for a variety of reasons. In most cases, the normal, smooth, gliding motion of your tendon is impaired, making movement painful. Tendonitis often involves the tissues, but can also encompass the inflammation of the tendon sheath, usually close to where the tendon goes into the muscle. Although anyone can develop tendonitis, sufferers are most often athletes and people with jobs that have repetitive movements.

What are the symptoms of Tendonitis?

Tendonitis symptoms greatly range from mild to really severe and are often times related to the size of the affected muscle or the amount of strain passing through the injured tendon. The presence of adhesions that affect the normal motion of the muscle and tendon are also a factor in tendonitis pain, as is unconscious body habits, like poor posture. Tendonitis generally does not have numbness or tingling associated with it. One of the most common symptoms of tendonitis is a tight, ropey feeling in the muscle cords that are contracting all the time. This constant contraction creates a continuous strain that irritates the tendons, adding aching and discomfort to a list of complaints, especially when moving the body part associate with the injury.

Victims of tendonitis will often notice that the pain usually worsens during and after activity, however, the pain can also present at rest. In tendonitis, there can also be mild swelling over the tendon and muscle soreness.

What causes Tendonitis?

The most common cause of tendonitis is repetitive overuse. Recreational, athletic, or occupational activities can contribute to the inset of tendonitis symptoms. For example, a person who plays tennis may over- use the muscles of the elbow by hitting the ball repetitively and cause tendonitis in the area. Likewise, starting a new exercise program, or increasing exercise, can bring on tendonitis symptoms. This occurs because the tendon is unaccustomed to the new level of demand. Aging can also cause tendonitis, as the tendons loose their elasticity and ability to glide as smoothly as they used to as time goes on.
