One of the primary tasks of an individual that manages a large network is to ensure the safety of the data stored in their computers and making sure that transmissions and activities are properly maintained. Hence the need, particularly for Internet oriented LANs, to get secure IP addresses like 192.168.1.1.

This IP is an IPv4 address designed specifically for the use of private networks. The different devices or elements in the network can have this IP address, but only a single one on the internal network can utilize it. The 192.168.1.1 can be setup to function and work as the default IP for any number of routers, but in most cases it is used by routers manufactured by Linksys.

Use with Routers

The specifications for each router may vary somewhat depending on the system setup, but they all share a common trait: that is, they use two IP addresses, one for the internal network system, and another one when accessing the Internet.

The process for configuring a router depends on a number of factors, not the least of which is whether it is wired or not. The difficulty with setting and fine tuning either one is subject to debate. However, regardless of which one is being installed, it needs to be stressed that it is a task that is best undertaken by someone who is qualified, especially if it involves setting up a network.

Routers and Linksys

After going through the installation, the user or administrator will want to modify the security settings. On Linksys this means logging in to 192.168.1.1. The default username and password is either blank or admin. Once you have made the necessary changes, you can create a new username and password.

Fixing Problems

The most common problem that may arise with 192.168.1.1 is being unable to access it. If you are using Windows, head over to My Network Places and go to its Properties panel. There you can check and modify the LAN and the TCP/IP as needed. From this section in the operating system you can assign the IP address, or you can, via DHCP, get an automated IP address.

If you cannot access the page, check the port; most Linksys router have 4; if it is not a 4 port router, the procedure and set up could be different. Consult the user manual that came with the firmware or software.

Another option you can try is to ping the router. You go to the Start Menu in Windows, and click Run. In the dialog box, type in “CMD” and a command prompt screen) similar to DOS) will appear. If you type in “ping 192.168.1.1” and it does not get a response, then something is wrong with it, and you should check the manual section on troubleshooting.

Alternatively you can enter “arp-a” and if 192.168.1.1 appears, then there is nothing wrong with the system. You can also go to ipconfig and select from the IP addresses that appear.

When making changes to the router or if it needs to be reset, you should make it a point to have the router user manual with you; the way that routers can be reset will be very different from one another, and you need to follow the directions for the particular one to avoid any complications.

The use of 192.168.1.1 is not mandatory; it is installed there by the manufacturer but you can easily change it through ipconfig, which can be accessed from the Run option in the Start Menu.

The growing number of viruses and hackers necessitates the need for
a secure working environment, especially with the sensitive data that traverses network elements. Using 192.168.1.1 IP address is the first step towards shielding a company’s network files.
