As we all know, a great part of the "battle of the bulge" is psychological. Adopting and keeping the right mindset to motivate oneself to exercise and watch those calories is imperative. If you give in to the urge to by those oversized clothes, you're well on your way to losing the battle.

Research shows that if you're having trouble shedding unwanted pounds, dressing to cover the bulges may be the wrong thing to do. It seems that once we've started the trend toward loose fitting, baggy clothes, we begin to lose the motivation for self-improvement, and slip instead into complacency or even apathy. We convince ourselves that the cover up has solved the problem. The fact is, however, the wrong apparel choices stand out as cover-ups.

This doesn't mean you should continue to wear that shirt or blouse when the buttons are threatening to pop off. On the contrary, we're talking about wearing clothes that fit right. If your shirt or dress size has increased a bit, then of course you aren't going to improve your looks or your outlook by squeezing into the same clothes. Buying 2 or 3 sizes larger, though, is only giving yourself the opportunity to grow into
those.

So, loosen the belt and the necktie a little and wear the right size clothing. You'll feel better about yourself, and start the right kind of cycles. The fact is, if you're conscious of your paunch or love handles you'll improve your posture, and if you carry yourself properly, you're not only making an immediate improvement in your appearance, you're also creating the proper tension in your back and abdominal muscles. You might be pleasantly surprised at how this one simple measure can help you start to lose weight.

Of course, it's not quite that simple. Exercise and diet are still the golden keys to weight loss, but both are much easier to face when you feel your goals are attainable. So how can dressing right help you maintain that upbeat attitude and avoid the potholes on the road to a new you? The trick is to avoid looking and feeling overweight. As difficult as that sounds, there are a few simple dressing dos and don'ts that can help:

Color Matters:

Darker colors can have a slimming effect if you avoid large patterns. A solid, dark suit worn with a shirt that's also a dark color creates a slimmer appearance for the men. Adding brightly colored neckties draws attention away from the midsection. For the ladies, a dark top and pants or skirt worn with a bright neckerchief or similar tie has the same effect.

Stick to the Basics:

Layers add bulk. Avoid sweaters under jackets, and try to keep the jackets light, or the guys may want to stick to the shirt and tie without the jacket if possible. While the jacket may help to hide the waist, it doesn't help your cause if it appears to be wrapped around a beach ball.

Ups and Downs are Good:

There's a reason that fashion experts continue to tell us that vertical lines slim. It's true. If you must wear stripes or patterns, make sure the emphasis is on the vertical

Emphasize your Assets:

In the immortal words of Disney's Baloo, "Accentuate the positive". Wear bright accents or lighter colors on the top or bottom, according to where you want the attention focused. Play down the problem areas with darker colors and lack of sparkle.

This is only a short list, but a little fashion sense will go a long way toward improving your appearance and in turn your self-esteem. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose but unwanted pounds.
