Determining the best vehicle tracking system for your needs and budget will depend upon the size of your operations and how much money you think you may actually save by investing in one. You may or may not have considered the advantages of vehicle tracking systems for your business, but when you look at the various ins and outs of the information they can provide, the potential for one of these systems to improve the financial health of your business is considerable.

Depending on the complexity of your operations it is likely that a fleet tracking system will easily pay for itself and more by increasing efficiency, reducing insurance and simplifying some staffing issues.

The more complex form of vehicle tracking that you might consider is an anti theft system. In the event of one of your vehicles being stolen then the vehicle tracking system can be used to locate the vehicle making the job of the police much easier. From a financial perspective the addition of sophisticated anti-theft technology will almost certainly reduce your insurance premiums and save you money; to be sure about this check with your insurance provider first if this is one of your aims in buying an anti-theft system.

To improve business efficiency, and save money that way, you would need to consider a more advanced vehicle tracking system that would be able to provide you with invaluable information on the day-to-day running of your business quickly and easily. Essentially a GPS tracking system would be fitted to each of your vehicles and information such as the exact whereabouts of the vehicle can then be transmitted via satellite and the Internet directly to a computer screen.

Information gained this way will allow you to see directly your drivers’ movements and habits, which will allow you to address efficiency issues, as well as any indiscipline or dishonesty on the part of a driver. Many modern systems will illustrate on your computer screen a snail trail on a map of the delivery or pick up areas your drivers’ are working in. This will allow you to see if your drivers are using the quickest routes, which has implications for both time spent on each job and fuel use - both of which are costing you money.

The level of sophistication in terms of remote tracking features varies and clearly those with more features will generally cost more. For example, some systems can provide information such as the whereabouts of the vehicle but not its speed and other details. The most important issue here is to do some research and get a clear idea of exactly what features you feel would benefit you most in terms of what information they would provide.

When you have weighed up the factors in relation to the size of your fleet, the complexity of your operations and what information different vehicle tracking systems would provide you can then decide which system is the most worthwhile investment in terms of its potential to improve your business efficiency.
