Christmastime is the most festive time of year, and everybody loves to get in on the celebration, decorating homes inside and out. Like lots of other things, these days the decorations are getting bigger (and bigger!) as well as better. And more and more houses now sport those large outdoor Christmas decorations.

Types of Large Outdoor Christmas Decorations: Inflatables and Snow Globes

While there are lots of type of these oversized outdoor decorations, two of the more popular are:

• Inflatables

• Snow globes

Inflatables

If you are in the market for outdoor Christmas decorating ideas, and something on the large side appeals to you, then you might want to look into inflatables. These originally came on the market for large outdoor Christmas decorations several years ago, and have largely replaced the plastic blow-molded yard decorations that used to be seen in many a yard.

Inflatables are usually made out of synthetic fabric (nylon, latex or a "parachute" material), constructed so that, when filled with air, they inflate into a recognizable shape. An electric fan constantly blows air into the figure, and many also have low-wattage lighting for nighttime displays. (The fact that these, like so many other Christmas decorations now, have to have a constant supply of electricity is one of the downsides to be considered.) Inflatables come in a wide variety of sizes, most often between 4 and 8 feet tall, and while there are endless varieties of inflatable large outdoor Christmas decorations, perhaps the most popular are snowmen and Santa himself.

Snow Globes

Even more recent than inflatables generally are the inflatable snow globes. These are a special kind of inflatable with small Styrofoam beads that are blown around inside to simulate snow. This type of inflatable is becoming increasingly complex, and some now have moving items inside (think Santa and his sleigh). Although these have the same downside as other inflatables (requiring constant power), they also have an endless ability to fascinate onlookers, both young and old alike.

Adding Large Outdoor Christmas Decorations to Your Collection

If you'd like to add this type of decoration to your holiday display, there are lots of options. In the lead-up to the holiday season, they can often be found at the most common mass retailers and home improvement warehouse-type stores, as well as some specialty decoration shops. They can also be found online year-round, but if you buy online, be sure to choose a reputable seller.

With prices on these items running all the way from 30 US dollars or so for the lower-end items, up to several hundred for the fancier stuff (and don't forget the larger dent your electric bill will be making on your wallet), inflatables are not the cheapest decorating alternative. But if you want to make your yard into a winter wonderland your kids will never forget, or if you're determined to be the local North Pole in your area, then some of these large outdoor Christmas decoration should definitely be on your shopping list this holiday season.
