Short Messaging Service (SMS), otherwise known as text messaging, is a built-in feature of mobiles phones. It was originally intended to help hearing-impaired individuals to communicate and have access to cellular telephone technology.

Today, text messaging has become many things for many people. For some, it’s a polite way of communicating to someone in a meeting or who is otherwise unavailable to receive a call. For others, it is a quick alternative to email, or a fun way to chat and flirt with various people.

Validity. When a friend sends you a text and your mobile phone happens to be offline, either you ran out of batteries or just switched your phone off, your message is temporarily stored in the message center. It will be forwarded to you when your phone goes back online.

You can specify the validity period on your phone such that when the period expires, all messages in the message center that are addressed to you will not be forwarded to the recipient’s mobile number once it goes online. The default validity of mobile phone text messages is set to ‘maximum’ and this validity period is determined by your network or wireless carrier.

Submission Reports. If this feature is activated, in every text message you send, you will receive a status message at the message center. A positive submission report informs that his message has been successfully sent. Otherwise, you will receive an error message with an advice to retry sending.

Delivery Reports. You will receive a report in your inbox for every text message successfully sent. Upon receiving your text message, the recipient mobile number alerts the system of the receipt and your message center reports back to you.

Using all of these SMS features on your phone, especially the Submission and Delivery Reports might seem like a hassle but can actually be very useful features. This is especially when sending important messages.

A submission report can tell you of failed sending attempts. You might want to retry sending or try other means to reach the recipient. Delivery reports could ascertain receipt of your message. If they did not receive the message, you could again choose to resend the message or just call and leave a voicemail.

All these SMS features enhance communication and prevent misunderstanding due to a faulty network. For what it is worth, text messaging or SMS is definitely an indispensable feature that makes mobile phone technology even more useful and handy.
