For a player who is used to starting, getting benched for a younger player can be tough to take. Such is the case with the Arizona Cardinals’ running back Edgerrin James. After starting the first part of this season, he was benched in favor of rookie running back Tim Hightower. Since that time, James has only been given the ball three times, totaling in a gain of five yards. The lack of playing time is not sitting well with the 10-year veteran, who recently asked the Cardinals to release him. General manager Rod Graves declined to entertain to idea and plans on keeping James on the roster for the rest of this season at least. The Cardinals need James should anything happen to Hightower as their other backup, J.J. Arrington, is not what the Cardinals consider a every-down back. The Cardinals are 7-3 as of week 11 and are in a good position to win the NFC West, which would be the first time they had done such a feat in 33 years. James has been a massive offensive contributor since he first entered the league in 1999 as the Indianapolis first round pick of that year’s draft. He started every game his first two seasons with the Colts, where he tallied 1,553 yards in 1999 and 1,709 in 2000, tallying 13 touchdowns both seasons. The next season, he played and started in six games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He had an injury-filled 2002 season, but still managed to start 14 games and tally 989 yards. He missed three games because of a back injury in 2003, but had 1,259 yards and 11 touchdowns on 310 carries. In the next two seasons with the Colts, James had over 1,500 yards rushing both seasons and nine and 13 touchdowns, respectively.

He signed with the Arizona Cardinals for the 2006 season, where he started every game and had 1,159 yards and six touchdowns. Last year, he had 1,222 yards and seven touchdowns. So far this season, James has started seven games and tallied 385 yards and three touchdowns. He hadn’t tallied a 100 yard or more game since the opening game against the San Francisco 49ers. Hightower did just that with his first start against the St. Louis Rams during week nine with 109 yards and one touchdown. Since then, however, he has only tallied 22 yards in the game against the San Francisco 49ers and 35 yards against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Cardinals have also been using four-year pro Arrington lately. In week nine, he had seven carries for 61 yards and during week 11 he had eight carries for 40 yards and one touchdown as well as a receiving touchdown. With that kind of young talent, it is no wonder that James is looking for a change.
