This article describes the ING game or technique that we teach in our NLP training in New York.

The technique leads you (or your client) into gaining control over the problems you are facing, and assist you in transforming them into a positive resource. It is a simple linguistic pattern that uses verb tenses to transform a “nominalization” into a process.

The technique relies on how our brain codes time and process. Our brain is adept at using verbs tenses to determine the kind of actions are being undertaken, and when. Hence past tense, “I did” shows something that was done and completed (or “perfected”) in the past, hence is a past perfect tense. In contrast, saying “I do” implies the action takes place now ("present tense").

In Neuro linguistic programming training this may be called a time line technique. It uses verb tense language patterns to directionalize the client’s mind along their timeline. In hypnosis training it is called temporal language (i.e. time based language).

In contrast to saying “I do”, when we say “I am doing” it implies an ongoing action, it implies movement. It is also implying that the movement is going on now and will be continuing into the future. Hence this is called the “present progressive” tense.

Using the present progressive tense turns a problem into a process that is going on now, and hence can be changed.

Let’s assume you (or your client) has a fear of public speaking. By saying they have “a fear” they are using a “nominalization”.

In NLP training a “nominalization” is a verb (such as “to fear”) that pretends to be a noun (“a fear”). A fear is something that seems to have a separate existence from the person doing the fearing. A fear is something that seems like it exists even when the person suffering from the fear is not afraid at that particular time. This of course is nonsense but is typical of the structure of client problems.

We use the present progressive tense (i.e. using the “ing” form of a verb) to turn the nominalization back into a verb. In our neuro linguistic programming training we would say (or lead the client to say) something like the following:

• I am fearing

• I am choosing

• How I am feeling

• I am choosing fearing

• I am choosing how I am feeling

• I am choosing relaxing

• I am choosing releasing fearing

• I am releasing fearing

• I am choosing calming speaking

• I am choosing confidence

• Am choosing feeling confidence now

• I am choosing confidenting

By using “ing” verbs we give the client the space to choose how they feel. Allow yourself some space to use the “ing” form of words even in they do not make sense (such as “confidenting”). In fact these type of words are more likely to be memorable to the client.

The above is a quick and easy technique that can be included in any coaching or other change work undertaken with a client. It can be done as a separate exercise or embeeded in a larger piece of work.

We teach many verbal patterns like this in our NLP training in New York. Call us for details of our NLP training courses in NYC.
