Decorating a baby’s room can be stressful and require a lot of planning. A simple goal can be aiming to create a funky, fun atmosphere with key furniture pieces and fabric designs that tie together design and education. Babies respond positively to bold, bright colors and surrounding them with constant brain stimulators is a way to peak their curiosity from a very young age.

Consider a bright color scheme with a crib and bureau to match. For a little extra flavor try retro pieces that can be sanded and repainted allowing you to choose your own relevant colors. Also, do not hesitate to purchase bureaus, changing tables and racks from thrift stores as long as you ensure the quality both by personal inspection and checking for any recalls on pieces that might cause a hazard.

A neutral carpet can be appropriate for a baby’s room, but accent area rugs are also a decorative option. Putting a rug in the main section of the room will protect it from traffic and accidents. Pick a color that complements your selected furniture pieces and has a busy pattern so it will wear well. Area rugs can be easily cleaned, moved and replaced to fit various schemes as the room transforms through the years.

Curtains are often an overlooked design element in a baby’s room. Use curtains that allow light to shine through, but also provide an element of privacy. As children get older, most do not like to have a skewed view through a window and can adore peering outside. Using a sheer fabric with an opaque underlay can allow light to come in and privacy when needed. The underlay can add color and style so make the most of your fabric choice and texture.

Other elements and accent pieces to consider that can add fun and funk include:

• Lampshades- lampshades can be functional by assisting with appropriate lighting

• Quilts- quilts can be personalized and used as a covering and not necessarily for sleeping

• Cushions- cushions can be placed on rocking chairs, window seats or changing tables and can coordinate with other fabrics in the room

• Bedding- keep the sheets neutral, but add colorful pillow cases and throw blankets

One last element – Personalize the room while peaking the baby’s interest by displaying photographs of family members and cartoon characters to develop their recognition skills. Placing them on the wall where they can be viewed from the crib is great so as they age they will see the photos in clear view when they are old enough to stand. Using home photographs in a collage or a series of framed images in color, black and white or sepia are great choices. Adding a variety of images and changing often can be a great way to “spice it up” as the photos get older while the baby grows and develops.

When planning to decorate a baby’s room, home décor blogs and kid furniture sites also offer helpful and diverse information with plenty of free ideas and tips. Now get cracking and make your family’s new addition a room that is fun, unique and educational!
