Who could have ever predicted after last season that one of this year’s most entertaining and heated matchups would be between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots? Last year, the Dolphins finished 1-15 while the Patriots were perfectly undefeated during the regular season. Week 12 of the 2008 season, however, found both teams tied for second in the AFC East at 6-4. The Dolphins surprised the Patriots earlier in the season with a 38-13 win over New England during week three. Since then, the Patriots have been waiting for a chance to prove themselves, which they did during the week 12 matchup. The Patriots ended up on top 48-28, putting them in second place and the Dolphins tied for third with the Buffalo Bills.

The Dolphins were incredibly consistent during the match, scoring exactly one touchdown every quarter. Even with the 20-point loss, the Dolphins had some positives. They took the lead from the Patriots on three separate occasions, only to have the Patriots take it back soon after. Chad Pennington went 24 of 41 for 341 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 99.7. The Dolphins’ only other touchdown was also scored by Pennington, as he ran another in during the second quarter. Toward the end of the game, the Dolphins seemed to unravel a bit mentally, leading to personal fouls and simple mistakes. Miami coach Tony Sparano even spoke on his players’ actions during the game, saying that they need to have a tighter rein on their emotions during games. The good news is that there may still be time to recover before the end of the season.

In the final quarter, the Patriots managed to score on the Dolphins three times for 17 points. The Patriots showed that they could do well both in the passing game and the rushing game with three passing touchdowns and the same number of rushing scores. Quarterback Matt Cassel we 30 of 43 for 415 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a rating of 114.0. Like Pennington, he also tallied a rushing touchdown. The difference with the Patriots is that their rushing squad also added two more touchdowns with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk also finding the end zone. Another difference was the field goal as Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski added two, both 30-yard attempts.

It is unclear how much this game will affect the chances at a post-season run for the Dolphins. Another occurrence during week 12’s game won’t help: the loss of wide receiver Greg Camarillo for the rest of the season because of a knee injury he suffered during the second half. The Dolphins will have to push on without him as they try to tally wins in their last games. Their opponents range from the Buffalo Bills to the San Francisco 49ers. For the last regular season game, the Dolphins will be up against the New York Jets, who are currently on top of the AFC East.
