Throw away your music players; there is a phone to take their place—the Motorola Rokr E8. A phone designed for music was unleashed to the market. But, can it hold up to its name?

Design

Similar to a touch screen, the keypad is pressure sensitive. It’s a mixture between an actual keypad and a touch screen, but it doesn’t lag down texting and allows reasonable texting speed. However, you may lose your phone if it’s not turned on. When turned off, the phone could almost be compared to a… big… black… thing. It’s buttons disappear and it camouflages fairly well.

Woo Hoo! A phone that lets us plug in our 3.5mm headphones! The design was kept clean by putting the microSD slot inside the handset and next to the SIM slot. So we hope you don’t plan to swap cards often without the hassle of opening up your phone. Also, the screen measured in at 51mm (2 inches) and produced quality, bright display.

Features

Even while using Opera Mini, this phones internet connection was almost nap-worthy. Although the web browsing is slow, the phone is great for international use by using EDGE and GPRS and quad-band compatibility.

Yet another phone without a flash for their camera, the Rokr E8 lacks it too. However, it comes packed with a 2-megapixel camera on the back with 2GB of storage space which can be expanded with the use of a microSD card and the memory is pooled together.

Although is supports music formats like MP3, AAC, WMA, and WAV files, you can leave your iTunes and Napster downloads on your computer because they won’t work on this phone. But, if you still have music to play, you can listen to it through the headphone jack or the stereo A2DP Bluetooth connection.

Performance

It may take a while to get used to this phone, especially if you’re used to using a Nokia or Sony Ericsson phone, but it does get easier with time.

Although it does lag a bit when navigating menus, it comes with a touch-sensitive scroll when which allows quick browsing through long lists. Although it’s not an actually keypad, the texting rate is fairly fast with the pressure-sensitive keypad. We were very impressed with the keypad in the long run.

The Rokr E8 lives up to its music player characteristics by providing top quality sound with good bass, strong mids, and bright treble. Also, call quality was great as well—although not the best. There are louder phones available but that shouldn’t shun you away from this one.

Conclusion

This handset is a phenomenal music phone. It takes some getting used to but it all seems enjoyable in the end. Sound quality is at its peak and it has a headphone jack for its music player. A little laggy and it could include more file format supports, but overall this phone is worth it.
