Troubled yet talented U.K. songstress Amy Winehouse was admitted to a private London clinic Nov. 23, and not for the first time. According to BBC spokesperson Chris Goodman, Winehouse’s camp released a statement saying that the 25-year-old Grammy winner suffered a reaction to medication she was taking as part of her ongoing treatment (he declined to say what specific medication Winehouse was taking.) The soulful singer landed herself in the hospital, London’s University College Hospital to be exact, after she collapsed in her north London home in June. At that point Winehouse was diagnosed with early signs of the chronic lung disease emphysema. Although the singer/songwriter canceled an August show in Paris citing illness, she is working on a new album and will likely hit the road once she is healthy again. Amy Winehouse was brought up by a taxi driver father and pharmacist mother on a healthy dose of jazz in the Southgate area of northern London. Although Winehouse appreciated her parents’ collection of legendary artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Dinah Washington, she nonetheless gravitated towards rebellious American R&B acts like TLC and Salt’N’Pepa. After being expelled from London’s Sylvia Young Theatre School, pop star Tyler James, who was a friend and school mate, gave his A&R her demo. As a result, Winehouse landed a contract with Island Records and the label released her debut album Frank in 2003, when she was just 20 years old. The album was an amalgam of jazz, soul, hip-hop and pop that instantly struck a chord with listeners thanks to her unique vocal delivery and knack for songwriting. Although Frank was nominated for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and two Brit awards and “Stronger Than Me” was also a hit, Winehouse’s personal life (namely the fact that she showed up for performances noticeably drunk) began to gain just as much press as her musical ability.

In 2006 Island suggested Winehouse enter rehab for alcohol abuse but the sassy soul singer refused, dropping the label and writing the hit song “Rehab” in revolt. The single was off her critically acclaimed sophomore album, Back to Black. In 2007 Winehouse took home the Best Female Artist honor at the Brit Awards and the album was released in the U.S. shortly afterward. Despite scoring covers on Rolling Stone and Spin and creating quite a stir in the music industry, Winehouse’s personal and substance abuse problems loomed, forcing her to cancel her North American tour. The singer’s husband, Black Fielder-Civil, landed himself in jail after a pub brawl (he recently lost an appeal Nov. 24 against his assault and obstructing justice sentence) and the controversy continues, although Winehouse is reportedly working on a follow-up to 2006’s Back to Black. Universal label head Lucian Grange told BBC that Winehouse’s new material sounds “sensational” in spite of her constant personal woes.
