Robert A. Meyer

The National Bureau of Economic Research has announced that the U.S. has been in a recession since December 2007. Now that’s what I call breaking news. I’m sure Americans are shocked by this latest development. Gee, talk about old news. Unless a person is in a coma, they are no doubt already painfully aware of our economic crisis. Once an establishment institution admits something that everyone knows—you know the situation is critical.

Let’s stare reality straight in the eyes. Our economy is in critical condition. The quack remedies of the “doctors” of strong economic measures are only exacerbating the patient’s condition. Bailouts, government buyouts, bank rescues and massive amounts of Federal Reserve money to stimulate the economy are equivalent to a person attempting to improve his health with massive ingestions of arsenic. I fear that the death of our economy is a certainty.

What is the lone individual to do? Where do we go from here?

The Social Solution

There is only one solution to our economic woes—and it isn’t massive government bailouts. It is adopting the social system of Laissez faire (unhampered) capitalism. Capitalism is the only social system that corresponds with the laws of praxeology—the true science of economics. It is the only system in harmony with the requirements of an individual’s life. Capitalism allows a man and woman to live a uniquely human existence. All other social systems hamper people’s ability to supply the necessary sustenance for their existence.

We need to be honest with others and ourselves. Our current economic catastrophe is the result of massive government interventions on the marketplace. Since the creation of the Federal Income Tax and the Federal Reserve System in 1913, the interventions on the marketplace have been accumulating—each intervention attempting to clear up the problems the previous intervention caused. Now we have arrived at the point where the next intervention could very well be the one the breaks the back of the “economic” camel.

If you value your life, liberty and freedom. If you desire your property to be safe from establishment predators. If you hope for a world where your children and your children’s children are blessed with prosperity and abundance because they are free to pursue their dreams and desires—you must fervently advocate the social system of Laissez faire capitalism.

The Personal Solution

You are obviously concerned about your survival during these trying times. Maybe you are hoping the economic situation will improve. As explained earlier, it isn’t happening. If anything it is worsening. As long as our “beloved” political and financial leaders continue to toss hand grenades on the marketplace economic destruction is evident. In fact it appears they have resorted to “atomic” weapons in order to annihilate our economic system.

Fortunately, you can not only thrive during these difficult times—but also thrive. Personal success, prosperity and happiness depend on the type of person you are. You can think and feel positive and optimistic. And most important, you can act in ways that guarantee your success. First, we will explore two ways of life that definitely won’t get the job done.

Attempting to escape your pain and suffering through irrationally selfish behavior guarantees you lose the game of life. Self-defeating behavior such as the use of dangerous drugs, drunkenness, excessive television viewing, overeating, laziness, believing in something for nothing, etc. is a one-way ticket to a hell on earth. I certainly understand the appeal of short-term solutions. Unfortunately, these types of behaviors are for losers. If you’re reading articles such as this, I’m sure you desire to win the game of life.

Helping others to achieve their goals and desires is pleasurable and rewarding. Holding out a helping hand to those downtrodden individuals who still possess the ambition to help themselves is a joyous experience. However, lending long-term assistance to those who refuse to help themselves is destructive to all involved. This is the reason social altruism is a disaster. Tragically, it is an institutionalized part of our social system—which is a major reason our economic system is descending into the abyss of chaos and collapse. When you subsidize negative self-defeating behavior you get more of it. When you tax or penalize positive, productive actions you get less of them.

I don’t consider an individual ‘helping others help themselves’ altruistic behavior. It is in fact rationally selfish behavior. The rationally selfish individual believes in trading value for value. He or she possesses impeccable integrity. He lives by his values and beliefs without compromise. He experiences the joy of his existence and because of this his sense of life is benevolent.

So where do we go from here? We joyously embark down the path of rational selfishness. The rationally selfish individual survives and thrives during the inevitable economic collapse.
