The ninth annual Latin Grammy Awards essentially celebrated the work of this Colombia native, who in only eight years in the mainstream industry has earned 17 Latin Grammy Awards and a plethora of commercial success. Along with soul star John Legend, Juanes debuted the single “If You Are Out There” during the evening’s performances, as Juanes commented that he was “happy with life, music, God, the academy,” to the Houston Chronicle. “For me, this has been incredible. It’s a dream.” Deemed the Latin Bono for his work with land-mine victims, Juanes has been touring the world since his debut album appeared in 2000. During this year’s Latin Grammy Awards the collaboration between Legend and Juanes was legendary not only for its content, which correlated to the recent election in the US, but also because it was the first time Legend has sung in Spanish. If Juanes was a citizen he would have voted for Obama, he told the Houston Chronicle, and instead announced to Latin fans everywhere, “You have chosen the right president. Congratulations. It is time to change” – the last a line from his single “If You Are Out There.”

Juanes grew up in Carolina del Principe, Antioquia, Colombia and found Latin musical influences like boleros, tangos, cumbias and Colombian folk music. Though his childhood was plagued by tragedy (his cousin was executed by kidnappers, his friend was run down by gunmen and his father died of cancer), he used his emotions to enhance his career. Picking up the guitar as a teen, Juanes was initially intoxicated with metal and had a successful stint with the group Ekhymosis, who released seven albums in ten years. But Juanes wasn’t quite satisfied, so he left his Colombia following and Metallica inspired group for the West Coast and eventually earned himself a record contract with Surco. His debut, Fijate Bien, earned him a Best New Artist Grammy Award, but it wasn’t until his sophomore effort, Un Dia Normal that Juanes’ music broke the mold for Latin artists. The album stormed the Billboard Latin charts, remaining at the Top Ten for 92 weeks and eventually stayed there for two years. Today the album remains the best selling and most popular Latin album. Juanes continued to record while impressing the world with his humanitarian efforts, named by Time Magazine as one of “the 100 most influential people in the world today,” the same year his third album, Mi Sangre, appeared.
