More often than not, most of us think of the red pepper, which is also known as Capsicum, as nothing more than a spice that we add to give Cajun and Mexican food its desired taste. Technically speaking however, cayenne pepper is the strongest red pepper of the Capsicum family, with paprika being the mildest. It is important to note that herbalists have designated both the terms capsicum and cayenne pepper for the same botanical agent.

For centuries, health practitioners have known that capsicum is much more than just a culinary spice. Because it was considered a hot plant, Chinese physicians used it for physiological conditions in which stimulation was needed. Capsicum is one of the only herbs that can be measured by its thermal units. This herb is a hot, stimulating pepper plant that often generates heat.

Recently, new medicinal uses for capsicum have been found through scientific studies. The red chile pepper has recently been studied for its extremely beneficial therapeutic actions and has been referred to as one of the purest and most effective natural stimulating botanicals in herbal medicine. Clinical findings have recently found capsicum to have the ability to heal ulcers, protect stomach mucosa, and alleviate peripheral pain. What is even better is that it does all of this without the side-effects that are commonly associated with powerful medicinal drugs.

Capsicum’s previous classification as a hot and spicy substance has done it disservice as it is extremely fiery and pungent and frequently regarded as dangerous and unpalatable. However, if it is used properly, capsicum is perfectly safe and effective against an array of physical disorders, which range from indigestion to ulcers and migraines. It has the ability to lower blood cholesterol, boost circulation, and speed up metabolism. Additionally, it is valuable for its mental affliction such as depression. Capsicum offers protection from infectious invaders as it boosts the effectiveness of the immune system.

Capsaicin, which is a powerful compound, found in Capsicum, gives the bite that is responsible for most of its beneficial on humans. The hotter the pepper is the higher amount of capsaicin that is included. While capsicum can be used alone, it is frequently added to herbal combinations in order to potentiate their overall action. This fact alone is what makes it a powerful but safe stimulant, which is one of the keys to complete healing. Capsicum, which is continually growing in prestige and looked upon as a modern-day botanical, is gaining new, impressive credentials.

Capsicum can be used liberally and is found in a variety of forms. A dried, capsulated form is probably the easiest and most practical way of consuming Capsicum. Ointments can also be purchases for the treatment of pain and psoriasis. Dried capsicum can also be mixed in hot water to be used in tincture form, which can be added to water or juice.

Although capsicum is generally recognized as safe in the U.S., doses should be followed precisely to avoid gastrointestinal upset and pregnant women or breast feeding mothers should avoid using capsicum. The initial use of capsicum often results in some skin irritations or burning, but it has been found that this slows with continued application. Be sure to avoid direct contact with the eyes or other mucous membranes because this herb will greatly irritate these areas of the body.
