Road rage, which can also be referred to as aggressive driving, is any incident or accident that is a direct result of the actions of a driver of a motor vehicle, motorcycle, truck or other vehicle on the roadways. Road rage has become a common occurrence on United States roads and has led to serious injury and even death. Road rage incidents can happen on the largest of highways and the smallest back roads across the country.

What causes road rage? Road rage can happen in an instant and you might not even realize it is happening. You might be turning onto a stretch of highway and cut someone off unknowingly. If this person is an aggressive driver they might begin to ride your tail extremely closely to the point where you pull off the road to let them pass. But they might not pass. They might pull over behind you. At this point you should drive away and continue on your trip. If they continue to follow you closely notify the proper authorities. If you stop and they stop again with you, do not get out of the car and do not put your window down. This is when road rage can really set it.

Road rage has claimed the lives of thousands of people across the country and it is becoming all too common in today’s day and age. Road rage incidents are extremely common. People are shot over driving too slow, cutting someone off, not signaling when changing lanes and much more. This is not an over exaggeration either. A couple of months ago in Philadelphia a road rage incident occurred on the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) in South Philadelphia. An SUV drove through the Walt Whitman Bridge toll plaza, cutting off another vehicle. The two drivers exchanged words and then the driver that was cut off shot then shot the driver of the SUV in the head.
How do you avoid road rage? Make it a point to become a safe and courteous driver at all times when you are on the roadways. Do not cut anyone off, do not make obscene gestures towards anyone, do not follow extremely close to the back of another person’s car, do not weave in and out of traffic, do not cut in front of someone and slam on your breaks, do not roll your window down and scream at other drivers either. If you avoid doing all of this then you can avoid a road rage incident when driving.

A lot of states have instituted aggressive driving hotlines, where you can call a number, such as #77 in New Jersey, to report an aggressive driver on the roads. This helps police identify aggressive drivers and pull them over. If there is a police officer in the area they will try to find the vehicle described during the phone call to the hotline. It helps if you can remember the make, model, color and license plate number of the car. If not, that is ok. Just reporting an aggressive driver might make the difference.
