Even though the price of a gallon of gas has gone down incredibly quick to under $2 over the past couple of months, you can never be too sure about when it is going to rise back up over $3 again. It may seem like the cool thing to do and everyone around you will be impressed but the more often you floor it from a complete stop, the higher the amount of gas will burn off, emptying your tank faster. Try to avoid this at all costs.

Tip number two is to keep a safe following distance for two reasons. One of those two reasons was just mentioned, safety. The other reason to keep a safe following distance is to avoid constantly slamming on your breaks or breaking in general. If you stay far enough behind the vehicle in front of you, if they begin to break, you can ease your foot off the gas without having to break and expend all of the energy needed to break. This will keep gas in your tank longer as well as money in your pocket longer.

Tip number three is to maintain a consistent speed within the speed limit. Don’t drive 80 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. First off it’s illegal and second off you will just wind up having to slam on your breaks anyway when you approach the congested areas of the highway. Also, experts recommend that you shouldn’t go more than five miles an hour over the speed limit because it burns up more energy than needed.

Tip number four is to not drive with the windows open and the air conditioning on at the same time. This also burns up a ton of energy because the air conditioning needs to work harder to cool off the car since you have the windows open at the same time. Avoid it. It may feel good to have the windows open and the air on but it won’t feel good in your wallet.

Tip number five involves using your gas pedal more often than your break. This goes along with tip number two. If you ease your foot off the gas in a congested area and let the car glide or roll, you will save gas. If you can do this and not constantly use the break and the energy that the break expends then you will keep your gas usage down as well.
Hopefully those five driving tips will help to save you gas the next time you hit the road. Once you get into the habit of doing them regularly it will become quite easy to continue to employ them every time you drive.
