Using the right release aid can considerably improve the flight of your arrow and provide consistency in your shooting. The diverse assortment of release aid options can make the task of choosing one quite intimidating and confusing. Here is an overview of the different kinds of release aids available to help you choose the one that’s best for you.

Caliper or Wrist Release Aids
Wrist release aids is fastened to the hunter’s wrist via a buckle strap or Velcro. In order for the release mechanism to work, you will have to pull the trigger using your index finger. The tension is on the wrist, allowing your fingers to remain relaxed. The calipers or the jaws that you use in order to pull the string can be easily and quickly attached to the string, thus making it ideal for hunting. The wrist release aid is actually the most popular kind of release aid among bowhunters, because they are very simple yet powerful.

When selecting a wrist release aid, look for the mechanism for length adjustment between the strap and the trigger, to ensure that your hands will fit perfectly. Also, check for the swivel or rotation feature, in order to reduce the torque.

Finger or Handheld Release Aids
As opposed to wrist release aids, handheld aids are held by 2 to 4 fingers. The release mechanism can be triggered using the little finger, the thumb, or what is known as back tension. Back tension releases are much more complicated to use, as they need to be rotated in order to be released. These are best used by more experienced hunters.

Handheld release aids are usually smaller and weigh less, and also tend to me more sensitive and responsive to the trigger. These releases are becoming more and more popular among bowhunters because of their light weight.

Automatic Release Aids
Automatic release aids are the newest kinds of release aids. They are available as handheld tools or as devices attached to the wrist. These release aids use a timer, which is activated upon pulling of the string. It is then released automatically after the pre-set time is reached. A safety button is used to prevent the release aid from firing. These release aids are quite advanced, and are best used by experts. They are also more beneficial for tournament or target shooters than bowhunters.

Choosing the Best Release Aid
For bowhunters, an additional feature to look for in release aids is the noise level they produce. Quieter release aids are better, so as not to distract the prey. Choose release aids that will not easily wear down. You may want to consider getting a D loop, as these can lessen the string pinch. Finally, look for something comfortable, as you will be using the release aid for several hours, or even days, when hunting. Test several kinds and find something that will work for you. It is a good idea to buy more than one release, just in case something happens to your release aid during a trip. Remember, finding the best release aid can significantly improve your shooting success!
