As the Jacksonville Jaguars wind down their disappointing 2008 season, it will be without running back Fred Taylor. Taylor was hurt during week 14’s game against the Chicago Bears, where the Jaguars lost 23-10. Taylor was later placed on injured reserve because of torn ligaments in his left thumb, suffered during the game. The team waited until later in the week to place Taylor on injured reserve as Taylor wanted to play despite the injury until a second doctor confirmed he should now. The blow is a big one to the Jaguars since Taylor is not only their starting running back, but also a team captain. He has been with the Jacksonville Jaguars his entire career and entered the NFL as the Jaguars first round draft pick in 1998. That season, he played in 15 games and started 12, tallying 1,223 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns as well as 421 yards receiving and three touchdowns. He suffered a hamstring injury during his second season, keeping him out of six games. He still had 732 yards and six touchdowns. He had a similar season in 2000 before missing all but two games in 2001 because of a groin injury.

He came back from the injury in a big way in 2002, starting every game and tallying 1,314 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. The next year was even better as he again started every game and tallied 1,572 yards and six touchdowns. He had injuries limiting him the next two seasons, but bounced back in 2006. Last season, he started and played in 15 games for 1,202 rushing yards and five touchdowns. This season has been a bit lower on the stats for Taylor. He has started and played in all 13 games prior to his injury and tallied 556 yards and one touchdown as well as 98 yards of receiving. Taylor was the starting running back for the Jaguars with Maurice Jones-Drew and Chauncey Washington behind him.

In the place of Taylor, the Jaguars are expected to either sign Alvin Pearman or LaBrandon Toefield as both have been working out with the team. Pearmen is in his third year in the league and was with the Jaguars for two years at the beginning of his career. During that time, he played in 29 games without any starts. He tallied two touchdowns while with the Jaguars. He was with the Seattle Seahawks last season, where he played in three games with no starts. Toefield was with the Jaguars from 2003-2007 before being signed by the Carolina Panthers. He was but before the season started. While with the Jaguars he played in 45 games with three starts. During that time he tallied 572 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as well as 277 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The Jaguars have the Green Bay Packers, the Indianapolis Colts and the Baltimore Ravens left to face this season.
