You are trying to cut back on your spending, so you vow to eat out less often and make some meals at home instead. So, what's for dinner tonight? You survey the refrigerator and pantry, only to discover that you don't really have anything on hand to make a complete meal. The next step, of course is to jump in your car and head straight for the supermarket, right?

Not so fast, most home economists would say. Although your motives are pure (trying to save money), going off into battle without a plan is a recipe for disaster. Look around the supermarkets — they are literally designed to take advantage of poor, hungry victims wandering around the aisles aimlessly. Everywhere you turn you see displays of items on "sale" and dozens or "impulse" items liberally sprinkled throughout the store. After manoeuvring through this maize of temptation, you finally get to the cash register and find yourself alongside at an entire rack of chocolate bars and other candy!

The first rule of grocery shopping is to always have a list of needed items. Learn to avoid the store displays completely, as they are invariably promoting expensive name-brand products. You are usually better off buying the less expensive store-brand goods, and the bigger supermarket chains normally demand fairly high quality controls on their store-brand items.

Your list should be made with your week's meals in mind, and your primary goal should be to strictly buy only the items on your list. If you're shopping for bread, eggs, and milk, you don't have to go down the potato chips and popcorn aisle.

The second rule of grocery shopping is to never shop when you're hungry. You will invariably pick up impulsive items that are quick and tasty but also expensive and unhealthy. Also, never shop with hungry children; leave the kids at home if you can. Little hands often have a way of sneaking unwanted items into the cart when you are not paying attention.

The third rule of grocery shopping is to avoid prepared foods. Microwavable dinners, pre-packaged meals, etc., nearly always cost more than you would have spent on the raw ingredients used to make the dish yourself. If you don't know how to cook a good variety of dishes, invest in some cookbooks or cooking lessons!

A fast cash loan can help you in case you need to go grocery shopping but all your money has been spent on bills. Rather than watch your credit card bill grow, with no plan to pay it off, only borrow when you need to by using small loans available through payday loan companies. They give you cash loans fast, often in under an hour. The difference between this and a credit card? You can keep track of your spending. You only have a small amount you can borrow at each time and you make a repayment plan so money comes out of your next pay check. With responsible lending options like this out there, you won’t have to worry about having a bad week financially, or turn it into a bad year financially. So go on, buy your cake and eat it too!
