What do you remember about your room as a child? It may have been the pattern of the wallpaper or the design on your chenille bedspread. What you probably remember most is the feeling you had about having your own space. A place to go, close the door, to be in your own world and dream.

Now you can create that same feeling for your children. See their bedroom space through a child’s eye. Young minds are impressionable with many beliefs formed by the age of five. Surround your young person with a roomful of images that reinforce a foundation for a positive self image.

Start with color. Don’t be limited by the traditional expectations of blue for boys and pink for girls. Infant’s eyes are actually more attracted to stark contrasts and bright colors than pale pastels. The strong colors found in the crayon box are the first to be chosen by children at coloring time. Washable paint on the walls and durable carpeting is a must.

Rather than picking a decorating theme from a current, popular children’s movie, sure to fall out of favor, select a more enduring theme that educates as well as delights. Animals, nature, space exploration, letters of the alphabet, classic book images, and famous quotes can decorate the walls and inspire the mind. The floor area is a popular place for a child so choose an area rug that doubles as a game board.

A sturdy and comfortable bed, sized to last for several years, starts the child’s belief in his independence from the baby years. Forego the traditional bedspread that goes down to the floor. All children know what lurks hidden under the bed. Instead, tuck the bedcovering under the mattress for an uncluttered and easy to make bed. Select a solid color or lively pattern to coordinate with your choice of theme. Use colorful storage boxes in full view under the bed to keep the monsters out. If space permits, add a second bed, or a pullout trundle bed below for the inevitable sleepovers.

Set in place good habits of responsibility even at an early age. Provide storage furniture or containers in your child’s room for toys and games and shelves for books to encourage reading. It’s never too early for a small scale desk or table to work on projects. Creating a designated place for these activities translates to effective study habits later.

A bulletin board of cork or fabric hung on the wall is a special place to showcase a child’s art work, family photographs and memorabilia. Hanging pictures of places they dream of visiting or of special items wished for will help your child focus on achieving those goals. Include a wall hung mirror in the room that will encourages your child to like himself and to smile at his own image.

Studies show that more than fifty percent of children currently have a television in their room. Television can entertain and educate. But, remember what you did in your room as a child. You dreamed and thought your own thoughts. A television in your child’s room can be a strong influence and a distraction from those necessary and formative activities of the imagination. Supervised movie and television viewing in another area of the house may be more appropriate.

As your child grows, computers and telephones may also make their way into their bedroom. Their own personalized decorating options will be explored. It’s a natural progression to becoming a young adult. But many of the selections you made for them, they may choose to keep. Maybe not the colors or the design themes, but the values.

The early environment you select for them will shape the person your child will become.
From solid beginnings they will grow into achievers of solid results.
