One of the worst things that a parent can hear is that their son or daughter is addicted to drugs. For many parents, hearing something like this is akin to a death sentence. It is a devastating blow to how they think of themselves in terms of parenting. If you were in their shoes, how would you feel? No doubt, you would probably feel like a failure. How could this have happened? What are your choices?

Many people become angry with their drug-addicted child, often refusing to speak to them or offer them any type of counsel. After all, they got themselves into this mess, right? Wrong. If your child is addicted to drugs, there are any number of reasons why this might be the case. If you are a single parent who is working two or three jobs to make ends meet, it can often be difficult to constantly supervise your child and make sure that they aren't getting into trouble. This means, keeping an eye on who they're hanging out with as well as getting to know the parents of other children they associate with.

For a lot of single parents and parents who are both working full time jobs, spending quality time with their children is difficult. Especially with economic times becoming more difficult, increasing number of Americans will have to take on second and even third jobs. But what will this mean for children? Drug use is analogous to bad habits in that they are like a comfortable bed: easy to get into but hard to get out of. As parents, there is not a lot you can do about having to work two jobs. However, what you can do is talk to your children. Make time for them. Be good examples of what adults should look and act like for them. Children look to their parents as role models. It should be no surprise then to find that children who grow up in homes where their parents use and abuse drugs typically wind up having some sort of drug abuse problems themselves. This is why it is so important that we teach kids about the dangers of using drugs and alcohol.

We need to teach them the importance of knowing how to handle the stresses and anxiety that are apart of everyday life. I say this because many people resort to drugs and alcohol because they think that it will “temporarily” solve whatever personal issues they are having problems dealing with when in fact, all it is doing is exacerbating the issue! Not all of the blame should be put on the parents, but a large part of the responsibility does fall on them to make sure that their children are informed about the dangers that are out there. We can't always be there to make the decisions for the people that we love. We can, however, stress to them how important they are to us, and part of that is letting them know where we stand on their involvement with drugs and alcohol.
