If you look around you, you probably have at least one friend who is overweight. You may have one person in your family who is obese, someone whose diet is not as healthy as it could be. Why is America so full of people that are overweight? Have we become so obsessed with working that we have lost focus of taking care of our own health? Are the vast majority of people overweight because they simply don't care about their health? Many of us who are not overweight would argue that this is more than likely the case. What is it about eating food that drives us to overeat? For many of us, food acts as a sort of comfort. If you're having a bad day, a piece of cake might make you feel better. There have even been studies conducted in which it was proven that when we eat, endorphins, or “feel good” hormones are released. Thus, we do feel a little better after we get our sugar fix, etc.

There is no easy solution to our problem, however. Another thing that contributes to the growing number of people who are obese is the type of lifestyle that they lead. It is often difficult to get ourselves motivated to exercise- especially if you have to commute a long way to work, work a 8-12 hour workday, come back and then make dinner for the kids, etc. Most of the time, it is in how we set up our schedules that we wind up with little to no time for self improvement. When things are important to us, we make the time for them. When we know that there is something we want to go to (like our children's plays or soccer games), we move things around as much as we can so that we can be there. If a loved one is sick or in the hospital; we drop everything! There isn't an excuse. If you want to save money, do your grocery shopping on your least busiest day. Make sure that you make a list of what you need ahead of time. Then examine the list that you've just made. How many things on that list are healthy items? Do you really need the bag of tortilla chips? How about that gallon of milk? Is it skim or fat free? Examine the little things in your life and see where you can begin to make changes. It is, after all, the little changes that you make here and there that will have the biggest impact down the road.

If you've heard the rumor that staying up late and not getting enough rest makes you fat, you would be partially right. It's not the fact that staying up late automatically makes you fat; but rather, it's the fact that when you stay up late, you naturally tend to go to the refrigerator or eat out of sheer boredom. You might be doing work late, and you might get hungry. However, when you eat late at night, you're not as active (if at all). It's not like eating during the day, when there is more opportunities to get up and go to the store or walk around because more things are open. Get your rest. Eat smart. Eat healthy. Your body will thank you.
