It appears as if Bonnaroo may be brought back to its jam band roots, as the jam band of all jam bands, Phish, is rumored to be headlining the 2009 festival. The lineup for the premier East Coast multi-stage, multi-day event won’t be revealed until February 2009, but http://RollingStone.com recently reported that sources close to Phish say the band will top the bill for two nights of the four-night festival. Phish frontman Trey Anastasio took the Bonnaroo stage (err, one of them) solo in 2002 and 2004 and also appeared with bandmate Mike Gordon in 2006 and alongside reggae rap star Matisyahu in 2005. This October Phish announced their official reunion and first public shows in four years in their March 6-9 Hampton, Virginia shows, but their reps and Bonnaroo officials have yet to confirm if the band will indeed headline the festival. Another rumor buzzing around Bonnaroo 2009 is that Bruce Springsteen will be Sunday night’s closing act.

Great Stage Park in Manchester, Tennessee (an hour east of Nashville) will once again host the eighth annual Bonnaroo Music festival June 11-14. Festival promoters have taken the current limited cash flow of patrons into account, offering the first batch of tickets as part of a payment plan with five installments of $50 each for the very first time.

Bonnaroo was inaugurated in 2002 and has since been hailed “Best Festival of the Year” by Rolling Stone. Superfly Productions and AC Entertainment, who put on Bonnaroo each year, started the festival with a focus on jam bands but over the years the lineup has gotten a little more eclectic, with artists from virtually every genre taking the stage at one time or another. The festival’s name comes from New Orleans R&B legend Dr John’s 1974 album Destively Bonnaroo, which is Cajun slang for “a really good time.” The festival is undoubtedly a good time for all that attend, but the name also honors the Louisiana music tradition of bringing live music to fans. Since 2002, the festival organizers have donated over $1 million directly to Coffee Country organizations in addition to annual charitable contributions and the festival’s activities bring annual revenue to the county in which the festival is held as well. Bonnaroo boasts two (confusedly named) main stages: the What Stage, with a 100,000 capacity, and the Which Stage, with a 30,000 capacity. The Centeroo area features three large music tents called This Tent, That Tent and the Other Tent, two smaller DJ tents and air-conditioned tents featuring comedy, jazz and films to allow patrons to escape the scorching summer heat.
