Pets suffer from many problems that can affect their skin. Skin functions as a barrier to protect the body from infection, ultra violet light and dehydration. It is the largest organ in the body. Proper health and function of the skin is dependent on the health and function of the other organs in your pet's body.

The body's organs are connected through a complex system, if one fails, all fail! There are two types of diseases that affect the skin: primary and secondary. Primary conditions affect the skin directly, such as flea infestations. Secondary diseases are those that first involve other organs and affect the skin as a result of the affected organs. The following are some common diseases which affect the skin and a brief description, of their treatments.

Hot Spots (Acute Moist Dermatitis): Hot spots are mostly caused by self trauma and then the result is an infection that happens as your pet tries to relieve pain or itching. To treat, thoroughly clean affected areas, using topical and antibiotics, and/or anti- inflammatory medications.

External parasites: Mites, fleas and ticks. These parasites break the skin and allow bacterial infections to occur in the epidermis. They may in some cases also lead to allergic conditions. Diagnosis can be achieved by observation and depending on the condition, microscopic examination of skin scrapings may be necessary. Treatment depends upon the parasitic infestation; they usually include anti-parasitic drugs and anti-parasitic shampoos.

Allergic Inhalant Dermatitis: This is a skin disease which causes excessive itching; it is a result of allergies, usually due to microscopic particles found in the air. Diagnosis is determined by clinical presentation, and is isolated by the absence of other problems such as ecto-parasites. Treatment can vary, but usually includes dietary supplements, antihistamines or steroids, and is often for a long duration. Shampoos and rinses can also be helpful.

Hypodermal: Hypodermis includes a wide area of infected skin which results in the formation of pus. Treatment is similar to that of hot spots, but generally is longer term than hot spots. Shampoos and rinses may be helpful.

Autoimmune Skin Diseases: There are several autoimmune skin diseases and the foundation of diagnosis is surgical biopsy. Treatment includes combinations of dietary supplementation, steroids, and immune modulation drugs.

Fungal Infections: The most common of the fungal infections is Ring Worm. Diagnosis is achieved by taking a culture of the organisms, and/or microscopic examination of skin scrapings. Blood tests may also be required to identify antibodies. Treatment options include topical and antifungal drugs. The use of antifungal shampoos and rinses may be required as well.

Food Allergies: Food allergies are very common in animals and appear as skin problems. Food allergies are generally diagnosed by eliminating other possible conditions. Treatment is feeding of hypoallergenic diets, for six weeks or longer.

Secondary Skin Disease: Secondary skin diseases include the common condition hypothyroidism. They are diagnosed by performing blood tests to identify the underlying disease. Diagnosis often additionally requires biopsies and in extreme cases X-rays. Successful treatment of the underlying problem most often results in improvement of the skin conditions.
