You have probably seen it at one place or another for your entire life. It is used for small windows in bathrooms, or larger windows in a living room, it is even used for an entire wall or as a room divider. You have probably seen it in public restrooms, or even on the exterior of large buildings. It is clear, but you can’t really see through it. Have you guessed yet? It is glass block! Glass block is also often called glass brick. It has been used for over a hundred years, but you might not even realize that you have seen it around for that long.

Glass block will add style, ambiance and creativity to any room decor and it is readily available for home improvement. If you decide that you like the look of glass block and would like to enhance a window or add a glass block wall the following tips will help you get the desired look you're going for.

Choose a Spot - Decide whether you want to replace a small bathroom window or a large living room window, or install an entire wall or partition for a room divider or replace an existing wall or partition. You might want to install a glass block shower or replace basement or cellar windows.

Choose Block - Glass block now comes in a variety of unique styles and sizes. It also comes pre-drilled or in panels. Some glass block will add light to any room and some is designed to diffuse light. You will also have the choice between transparent or translucent glass block.

Measure Dimensions - You will not be able to cut the glass block, so it is necessary to get the correct dimensions. Glass block is installed very similarly to brick installation, so if you have experience with installing bricks, you should already understand the process and tools and supplies that are necessary. A glass block dealer should help you with any questions that you may have.

Find a Dealer - Shop around and do a little price comparison. A dealer should have advice and/or reference materials to help you with the installation.

Keep in mind that you may want to locate a reputable contractor for the glass block installation. They will have the know-how and the tools to do the job right. But if you are a do-it-yourself home improvement person, glass block is easy to work with and install. Just make sure that you have the right tools and the amount of time necessary to complete the project.

A few of the advantages of glass block are that it will add more light to any room, it is easy to clean and maintain, you will not have to spend money on draperies, and you will not compromise security as you cannot see through glass block. You can enhance any decor for a reasonable amount of money, and you will have a little piece of Americana that still looks very modern.
