The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that first formed in Chicago in 1988. For most of their recording career, the Pumpkins consisted of Billy Corgan on the vocals and the guitar, James Iha on the guitar and vocals, D’arcy Wretzky on the bass/vocals and Jimmy Chamberlin on the drums and percussion. The Pumpkins are known for having a diverse, densely layered and guitar-heavy sound that contains elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock and also electronica. Billy Corgan is the group’s primary songwriter, and his grand musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band’s albums and songs, which have been described as “anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan’s nightmare-land.”
