Considering the present Chinese society propelled fervently by the pursuit of material wealth, a sound guidance and clarification should be made immediately and definitely, applauding that a man’s value is not proportionate to the wealth, be it material or spiritual, he creates to the entire society. A certain number of people may snigger at the above-mentioned notion, claiming that by advocating the antithesis of the notion, the society as a whole is bound to benefit from the stimulus as well as encouragement it renders for individual self-fulfillment.

However, the case, more often than not, steers individuals to the opposite direction. In other words, as long as individuals are in the process of making strenuous efforts to lead a significant life, their values are equal. Only by bearing in mind the equality of their values can the society be diverted back into the healthy road, with each individual, whether a mental or a manual labor, exerting their utmost efforts to make contributions to the society.First and foremost, it is undeniable that in the face of God, all life is equal regardless of their race, sex or occupation. That is to say, the value of people from different walks of life cannot be graded according to the wealth he creates to the society. Say, it will be utterly offending and snobbish if we uphold the superiority of a over-night business giant over an honest sheepherder simply out of the reason that the former creates more wealth than the latter.

The previous notion of equal value, compounded by the following severe and thorny problems, witnesses the immense absurdity of the opposite opinion. Bearing in mind this snobbish point of view, the social mores is very likely to undergo a series of disturbances and challenges. Firstly, preaching the motion equals the advocating of the pursuit of wealth, esp. material wealth in this profit-orientated society. The reason followed would be the fact that this snobbish view actually encourages people to disdain those disadvantaged lower-class people, thus giving rise to the degeneration of social morality.

Special mention should be made, moreover, to the subversion and degradation of job values that ordinary people undertake. For instance, under the influence of this motion, an oddjobber is likely to define his job futile and meaningless with a desperate mood, hence contributing little, if any, to the society.

The third reason is that the motion sends a wrong signal to the grassroots, saying that the wealth created by a few heroes are worthy of extolment while the value held by the mass is petty. However, we will fail to do just to the mass if we ignore the considerable significance made by the common people in the surging torrent of historical development. Even nowadays in this relatively convenient and comfortable society, the radiant glories of ordinary people as a group still merits remembrance and further advocating. A good case in point is the recognition of every internet user, rather than a single hero, as the person of the year in 2006 by Time magazine.

Judging from all evidence given above, the proposal of a man’s value being proportionate to the wealth he creates to the society is completely misleading and ill grounded. On the contrary, given the equality of value acknowledged and each significant life and job respected, more contributions will be made to the society.
