For some people, attending black tie functions is like stepping into a coffee shop; it’s something they do on a regular basis. However, for others, a black tie function is something they are likely to get invited to once or perhaps a couple of times more in a lifetime. Perhaps the first tux you’ll ever wear is at your wedding or the wedding of a friend but then again, you may just have other black tie events that call for this formal attire. Many people quibble with the question of whether to rent or buy a tuxedo for the occasion. Here are some things to consider that will help you decide the right option for you:

Frequency of Usage

Obviously you want to consider how common black tie events are for you. Chances are if you are trying to make the decision to rent or buy, the event you will be attending is one of the first black tie affairs. When you rent a tuxedo, you will need to rent the entire ensemble. This consists of several parts: A tuxedo jacket and pants, tuxedo shirt, bow tie, cummerbund or vest and shoes -if you do not have an appropriate pair. This will cost you at least $80 to $100 just to rent the whole set for one day. You also need to consider the expense it takes to got the the store, get fitted, pick the tuxedo up after alteration, and finally to drop it back off.

Purchasing a tuxedo will cost you around $600-$800 for a classic set made of quality materials. If you purchase a tux in a classic, tailored style it will never go out of fashion. Think about how many events you see yourself attending that will require a tux over the next several years. If you think there is a chance it could be five or more, you are probably better off purchasing than renting. Keep in mind that you will have to bear the expense of having the garments cleaned occasionally.

Drastic Body Changes

While we would all love to stay the same size and shape we were at 18, that rarely actually occurs. A purchased tuxedo that is made of quality materials and construction can be altered if your weight changes slightly over the years but if you foresee your body changing dramatically in the near future, renting may be the way to go. If you are planning on losing weight, you may want to consider actually purchasing your tuxedo once you reach your goal. Knowing you need to still get in to that expensive attire will be a great motivator to keep the pounds off!

Other Things to Consider

If you are a high fashion kind of guy, then buying your own tuxedo might be your best option. If fashion is important to you, buying will give you a much wider range in quality fabrics that will drape much nicer. Purchasing your tuxedo means that you can often wear higher quality materials than those found at rental stores. If you decide to purchase, be sure to get the highest grade wool tuxedo that you can afford. Only pure wool tuxedo's should be considered preferably in the range of a super 140s wool or higher. You may also consider only buying part of the entire ensemble and renting the rest. Perhaps you can purchase a nice handmade bow tie, cummerbund, shoes and dress shirt, and rent the jacket and the trousers.
