When installing your new flooring, the underlay can determine the success and durability of your new product’s life span. There are different types of flooring underlay for different types of installation and sound, heat or moisture insulation quality.

There is carpet underlay and wood or laminate floor underlay. All types offer a variety of characteristics to make your new flooring more comfortable in different situations.

On carpet underlay, for example, there is waffle rubber underlay, under floor heating carpet underlay and PU Foam underlay. They offer different thicknesses, acoustic insulation factors, thermal insulation and varying degrees of durability and comfort. Depending on thickness, the carpet’s plush quality under foot can vary depending on underlay.

On wood and laminate floor underlay, they may be similar to carpet underlay in the fact they offer acoustic and heating insulation, but may be rubber, foam or film and have added features such as moisture block, or extra cushioning for quiet, flexible walking. Many laminate floors may “float” for less warping and more flexibility, so the type of underlay can determine the “give” of the floor.

Depending on the type of installation, and type of material you are using for your new flooring, you may need to consult a flooring expert to get the recommendation for the best underlay. Some areas may need more moisture control or durability factors than others, depending on the traffic of the installation.

Also, depending on the sound insulating qualities needed, such as in a second story, you may need a higher acoustic rating, for example. In floors that may be over a basement or crawl space, you may choose a under floor heating underlay or a higher thermal rating. The comfort of your new floor will depend on where it is being installed, the type of flooring and the underlay that you choose.

Moisture barriers and qualities are important on wood or laminate flooring to keep the floor from warping or trapping moisture underneath the floor. They act like the vapour barrier does on your house, protecting from condensation or moisture that could be absorbed from spills. Underlay for wood or laminate floors is important in the life span and durability of the floor.
Under floor heating underlay can make a wood or laminate floor warmer under foot on cold mornings and make them more comfortable, while adding insulation qualities.

Choosing underlay for your new floor is an additional cost to consider when budgeting installation costs. They vary in qualities and thickness, so you need to analyze the location of the flooring installation to see what priorities you need to look for in selecting an underlay.

A flooring expert can help you select the best type for your installation, and the best underlay for the money. Since there are different materials and manufacturers, some may work better on the type of flooring you have chosen than others.
Underlay is an important part of any flooring installation, and you should seek expert help if you are unsure of what type is needed for your new flooring.
