The title “professional” is the general heading many use to describe business men and women of today. The term itself often brings the vision of intelligent, well dressed, successful individuals, but fails to spark thought of the most important aspect of any business professional’s career. This aspect is “mentoring,” or “coaching” as many call it, and it is the simple, but significant act of experienced individuals passing their useful knowledge and tested methods along to others headed in the same direction of success. The fact is, anyone who plans to be a successful business professional must have reliable mentoring or coaching.

If having this experience based mentoring is so important why do so many fail to associate this idea with professionals and business in general? It could be that so called “self made” men or women feel it is an admittance of dependency or that corporate structuring has termed it in less personalized manners such as “training.” Whatever the reason, it is often true that most successful business people have been coached in many stages of their professional life and “at home” or “self directed” professionals are no exception.

When speaking of self owned businesses and the professionals who run them, many are quick to add statistics of failure or a story of someone who lost. While most are fabricated reasoning for these individuals to not take the step and be their own boss, some are true, but not without mistakes to point out. One of the main steps overlooked, by professionals who choose to run their own businesses, is finding a mentor. They rely too much on luck and chance and never make the effort to seek coaching advice from someone who has done what they are trying to do.

Think of a modern day automobile engineer. Every time a car manufacturer hires on someone to work on the design of a new car, they do not start from scratch, redesign Henry Ford's Model T, and most certainly do not rethink why the wheel should be round. These individuals, as innovative as they are, trust in other’s work and the training or advice of professionals in their industry.

Building on the knowledge and advice provided by mentoring from others is not a suggestion for professional success, but rather an essential step that all who are successful take – especially if the plan involves being an “at home” or “self directed” professional. This type of professional does not have corporate training or other mentoring structure in place, which is why it is such an important step. It is ultimately up to these individual business men and women to decide where to get the advice needed.

The task of deciding on your mentor or coach may appear daunting at first, but after some research through the Internet, a local chamber of commerce, or word of mouth these feelings will be eased. There are a variety of existing professionals who are willing to pay forward and coach up and coming professionals. So whether entering into real estate investing, the cash flow note business, or other opportunity, it is important to recognize the positive relationship between coaching and success. Get out there and find a mentor!
