These days, you can find roadside assistance plans from a variety of sources. Your insurance provider, your vehicle's manufacturer, your cell phone service carrier, and even your credit card company may offer such plans.

Whether you decide to purchase roadside assistance from one of these kinds of providers, or a more traditional roadside assistance club, three important factors to consider when shopping for the right roadside assistance plan are coverage, convenience, and cost.

Balancing the Coverage, Convenience, and Cost of Roadside Assistance Plans

When it comes to purchasing a roadside assistance plan, naturally you want the plan that's going to provide both the coverage and convenience you need at a price you can afford. Convenience is especially important, because it not only applies to the services you'll receive, but also to the shopping process.

Companies that specialize in plans, including insurance carriers and auto manufacturers, often provide the most convenience. They already have ties to your vehicle, and you've already done business with them so you know what to expect; however, it's important to remember convenience can be a double-edged sword. It isn't always the best deciding factor when purchasing a roadside assistance plan.

For example, cell phone and credit card companies often send assortments of pamphlets that have nothing to do with your monthly bill, and sometimes these pamphlets offer services like roadside assistance programs. Rather than getting swept up in the convenience of enrolling in a roadside assistance plan offered by your cell phone or credit card company simply because the glossy information is right there in front of you, you should take time to shop around. If the plan doesn't offer the kind of coverage you need at a price you want to pay, it's not going to be a practical, or useful, purchase.

Points to Remember When Shopping for a Plan
Consider these tips once you're ready to start shopping for a roadside assistance plan:

* If a mailing from your credit card company or cell phone provider piqued your interest, jot down the benefits of that company's plan and then shop around for companies that offer similar coverage. You may end up finding comparable plans for lower prices.

* Don't underestimate the benefits of purchasing a roadside assistance plan from a company that specializes in them. Spending a bit more time on research is well worth the experience an established company can provide.

* Aside from companies that specialize in roadside assistance plans, auto insurance providers and vehicle manufacturers may turn out to be the most reliable ways to go.

Most companies offer services such as towing up to a certain distance and gas when you have accidentally run out. These services are often monitored and you have a limit as to how many times you can use them per year. This is great for the company offering the service but bad for you if you happen to have a bad year. While they are trying to limit their liability they end up increasing your risks. There are many companies who offer unlimited occurrences. They typically offer a better piece of mind and have better coverage for your vehicle and family.

Most importantly a person searching for a roadside service policy must decide how many cars and how many people they want covered. Most people drive one car that does not give them any trouble and one that is much less expensive that worries them. If this is the case then I recommend buying one policy that covers the less expensive vehicle. If you are buying the policy because you are trying to protect a person from getting stranded then I suggest buying a policy that covers anyone who drives that car or vehicle.
