Haron Nawabi

The purpose of this article is not to blame specific individuals, but rather to open the eyes of those who are emotionally oblivious towards the truth. All I ask is for you to look at an issue through every dimension. The reputation America’s foreign policy is to ensure freedom and civility blossoms with in the countries around us. The idea is an allusion that the media has used to justify the actions committed by our federal government.

For example, the modern day conflicts that we face in Cuba. We are against and opposed to Fidel Castro and his military because they are communist and Marxist. The media manipulates the way you think with propaganda, but you can clear your vision if you set aside emotions and consume your thoughts based on logic.

It started with Spanish-American War in 1898. America believed that Cuba’s connection with the Caribbean could bring many advantages in terms of our Navy and resourceful powers. The only factor that prevented us to intervene was a Spanish military occupying Cuban turf. During this time, yellow journalism created an oppressive persona intended for the Spanish Rule in Cuba. The United States and the Spanish Navy were in command with in the areas of many Islands with in the Pacific as well. The United States had a technical mishap with a ship referred to as the U.S.S Maine. The newspapers exaggerated the story and blamed the Spanish. This event became the spark of the flame that allowed the military to collide with the Spanish army. We fought with them in the pacific and Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders were given permission to fight in Cuba due to the support of the media. The press referred to this war as a glorious victory. When we overthrew the Spanish, we stated that the people of Cuba would be given freedoms and an independent government. The ideas implanted into the peoples minds was a beautiful thing, but even the elegance of a rose will eventually decompose and die.

The Cuban-American treaty was established. It stated that the United States would have control over coastal lands and trades. If Cuba wanted to contain diplomatic relations with other nations, they would need America’s consent. In return, America promised an independent government and sovereignty for the people. As time went on, American corporations dictated Cuban leaders. The corporate ideologies in the economy raged the people. The majority of people felt deprived of freedom and prosperity. The laborers were being underpaid and believed that the greed that possessed the corporate executives was a fundamental flaw in a democracy; hence, the ideas of socialism in a communist regime arose. Mentality resembles the conditions you live in.

Like the majority of those who do not comprehend the influence of their surroundings, you would allow your emotions to manipulate your decisions. If you worked long hours and came home with enough money to look for food in the garbage, what are the thoughts that will enter your head? You don’t have to support the rebels, but to completely ignore the opposition of your beliefs is the very definition of ignorance. How would you feel if you forced your child into the work force due to the desperate need for money? An environment that encourages the incentive to create crime surrounds you. You will most likely loose signs of sympathy, and the foundation of your patience is lost to the pledge that has been broken.

Philosophers like Machiavelli understood that it is in Man’s nature to take what he distraughtly needs. Decades after understanding the reality of their situation with American relations, rebellious beliefs inevitably organized a militant threat to the current government in Cuba at the time. The rebels were united with one common belief, equality. If you live in a developing nation, the expansion of your thoughts becomes limited due to the lack of external economic exposure beyond your borders. When you are denied what you are required to have, your brain tends to form a realist state of mind. Human rights becomes irrelevant, and the only objective is to carry out your goals.

People may form different perceptions from this article because the way they may interpret my message can vary. I DO NOT SUPPORT the rebels in Cuba and I DO NOT SUPPORT Fidel Castro, but I DO UNDERSTAND reasons behind their beliefs. The only way two different perspectives can truly resolve any conflict or settle a dispute is if they meet with in a mutual agreement. We can identify ourselves with a peaceful solution when we choose to analyze every aspect of a crisis. I intentionally employ the word “choose” because the outcome we will confront is a choice we will make. This philosophy can be applied to any global conflicts people face. There is no right or wrong on either side. There is only the lack of awareness that our world suffers from.
