The Frame’s mould

Hoping to please those who love the frames, but do not know all their technical characteristics, we would like here to clarify the meaning of the mould and describe its main elements.

The term "mould" indicates a design or pattern, made from a strip of wood through the aid of a machine called “scorniciatrice”. The mould has certain characteristics and techniques that derive from the three measures that make up the width, height and “battuta”, a slit where the object is inserted to be framed.

The width of the frame is an element which must be taken into account when calculating the meters of wood needed to frame the object. The width of the frame must be multiplied by the number of cuts that are to be carried out to obtain the four corners. To this figure we must sum the perimeter of the frame and, so you get the total length of wood needed for each piece.

The height of the mould is the back of the frame.

The battuta is finally the internal side of the frame where the object should be inserted. The height of the bar is technically necessary to identify the most suitable frame for each object. For example if we had a painting on canvas, which usually has a thickness ranging from 18 to 20cm, we should choose a mould with a slit that can contain this object.

How we can utilize a frame

The frame is like a beautiful dress for the subject and it is used to give it a proper aesthetic enhancement. "An unframed piece f art is like a body without a soul" said Van Gogh. We should therefore be very careful in selecting the most appropriate frame for its subject. To do this we would like to give you some general tips.

For antique engravings, the most suitable frame is flat or shaped in gold or silver finishing. For British engravings, however, a flat frame in dark walnut with a gold wire is preferred, in light with silver; for engravings in general, we recommend a flat or shaped frame in walnut finish.

On the other hand, for subjects of modern graphics, a flat metal frame, in natural or lacquered wood, is preferred.

A picture frame for classical furniture is usually large, slightly shaped, in gold or silver finish, whereas for modern furniture is large, flat, in natural wood or lacquered, and combined with metal.

Keep in mind that for all the above, the height of the slit is not decisive

For Paintings on canvas or for “arazzi” we recommend a large-shaped frame, in classic finish, with at least a 18-20cm high slit.

These are only general guidelines, which of course can be tailored to the tastes and needs of each customer.

It is extremely important to remember here how this interest has been goaded by the market and specifically by antique dealers who have dedicated their time over the years to the discovery, to the study and to the diffusion of a frame.
