The benefits of green tea may include a reduced risk of various kinds of cancer, a reduced risk of heart disease, improved brain function, increased energy, less joint pain, increased fat oxidation and improved insulin sensitivity. Most of the studies have been conducted using cell cultures in the laboratory or animal models.

Because of this, some sources say that there is no “proven” human benefit. Groups such as the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine are sponsoring some studies, but some of the benefits, such as the decreased cancer risk, cannot really be proven in human beings.

If everyone took the supplement from the age of four or five and we saw no cancer in future generations, then that would be actual proof, but that’s not likely to happen. What nutritionists and natural health experts recommend is that we do everything that we can, on an individual basis, to avoid known and probable carcinogens. To further reduce the risk, we should take supplements that contain lots of different antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Because oxidation and chronic inflammation are believed to be the primary causes of cancer, heart problems and other life-threatening diseases.

Research about the benefits of green tea will continue and we’ll know more, as time goes by. But, if you’re anything like me, you’re not going to wait around. Human trials take years to complete. The results are not always publicized. It’s the more interesting ones that make the news. If the results of a human study supported a reduction in cancer or heart disease, news agencies would be likely to say, “Everyone knows that!”

Now, if the study found that the benefits of green tea had been overstated, you might see a report somewhere. Not long ago, a study reported that the vitamins C and E were not beneficial in cancer prevention, despite numerous earlier studies showing that they were. Study results vary due to human error and other factors. For example, the researchers might not have used the best form of those vitamins. Synthetics, which are common, are not as effective as the natural form.

The best supplement manufacturers use only the most active form of vitamins and other nutrients. All of their ingredients are natural. Most of them are plant extracts. They provide the benefits of green tea, without the risk associated with increased caffeine intake.

The manufacturers check the raw ingredients for contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, lead, mercury and other toxins, as well as for potency. They check the finished batch to insure quality. They may cost a little more than the generics, but that’s because they don’t include synthetics, which are much cheaper.
