If you're like me, you were influenced a lot by your mother. Mothers are great. I love mine. And here's the problem. She loves me too.

Unconditionally.

Unfortunately, that's not how the real world works. That's not how women who aren't your mom work.

You have a job, and I bet, that when you went for your job interview you looked your best. Of course, they weren't screening you for your fashion sense, but you know that if you want to get the job you better present well.

What makes fashion hard is that there is no one way to dress. It all depends on the type of women you're going for. You start off by looking at the kind of guys your type of girl is with. From there you want to dress just a bit better than them.

Add just a little more unique, personal flair, or do it just bit bigger. The key is to fit in and yet stand out.

Fit in, and yet stand out. That's a paradox if I've ever heard one. What's up with that? Well, it comes down to communication. Each style of clothing communicates something different about you.

Be very careful when taking fashion advice from good intentioned friends. Guy friends will subconsciously sabotage your fashion forays because they can be intimidated by you changing yourself. Female friends will often hold you back because they want to mother you rather than make you the kind of guy that will have them fending off their girlfriend's jealous advances.

Fashion is not about money. In fact when you're starting out, buy the cheapest stuff you can find because you're experimenting and experiments do go awry.

I know when I was developing my style I had to throw out tons of pants, shirts and accessories because they just didn't fit me nor my image quite right.

Before you ask, good fashion sense is not a absolutely necessary to be successful with women.

It will make your life a lot easier, though. Remember, women are looking for the best match. It's right there in the words. So appear to be the best match and you're one step ahead of the game.

Mistake #3 - Buying expensive things - many men use money to cover their fashion knowledge gap and miss the real key to dressing well. It's not about the amount of money or the brand name, it's about your look.

Mistake #4 - Playing it safe - making a few fashion faux pas is inevitable. Men have to understand that they have to experiment and risk discomfort to develop their own unique style

Mistake #5 - Avoiding colors - many men avoid colors because they worry about matching, but mixing colors is one of the quickest and easiest ways to show that they are fashion savvy.

Mistake #6 - Ignoring Fit - most guys, dress for off the wrack comfort. To really look good you must buy clothes that will display your body to it's best effect. For starters, a tailor should hem all your pants to the right length.

Mistake #7 - Blending in - women dress to distinguish themselves from other women and men need to do the same. Men must find a base style that appeals to their ideal women and then move beyond that to set themselves apart.
