Here are a few tips to help you get started with decorating your child's room. The best part about this is that your child can help you do it this time around, unlike when they were yet to be born or an infant. So this can be a fun project you can do together!

1. Wall colors should be determined after you purchase the bedspread set. This is because it is easier to mach the material to the color; than the color to the material. Select a new color to paint the walls, a color that your child likes and is from the material. If you have a strong objection to it, though, negotiate with perhaps a lighter version of that color, or limiting their color choice to only one wall.

You can always use simple faux finishes and get the child to help if they are old enough. Sponging and ragging are the simplest to accomplish and require little skill. Another choice is wallpaper; but you will have to sort thorough many books with your child to find something you both like.

2. Lighting is important and you need to decide the type necessary. If you have a desk for homework you will need a bright enough light for reading. You should also consider a ceiling fixture for added lighting. Keep a night light with a low wattage bulb in case it is necessary to keep it light throughout the night. Kids of all ages enjoy mood lighting and other lighting effects such as disco lights, statues or flowers with light effects, and glow in the dark items.

3. Bedspreads are the finishing touch in a room. Your child may be into sports or celebrity items and this can be costly as their desires change and you have to start looking for their new phase of favorite sports or music groups. Of course; you should always buy when there are sales; just in case that happens.

4. Younger children like to have items in their room personalized. This gives them a sense of the room belonging o them. If they have a collection you should set up shelves or a bookcase to keep the items organized. Collage picture frames are a good way of keeping their personal photos organized and displayed. A toy chest with the child’s name will keep the toys in place…at least sometimes. Be sure the chest has a non-dropping lid to keep little fingers safe.

5. Create a comfort zone area in the room for hanging out and reading or playing games. Think about using big pillows, plush or inflatable chairs, anything your child might enjoy to sit on and relaxing in. You'll also want to conveniently have some books placed within their arm's
reach. If you have a teenager, they'll likely want to have another seating space for you or their friends to use.

6. Purchasing furniture. His is where you will need to think smartly. If your child ids young you will want to purchase good quality furniture; but make sure it is something that can be used throughout your child’s older years. Having kid furniture doesn’t help when the child gets older and you have to go out and purchase new pieces. So; be a savvy shopper.

Also; be sure to anchor tall pieces of furniture to the walls if you have a young climber. It is easy for a piece to topple over and seriously hurt your child. Furniture anchors can be found a most home center stores or even at the furniture dealer.

7. Window treatments should be a mach to the bedding if possible or you can find the dominant color as use it for the treatments. Horizontal blinds or shades work the best; but be sure to shorten the cord on the blinds so young children won’t get tangled and hurt themselves.

8. Be sure to have fun and make your child part of the decorating. This will give them pride and the feeling of accomplishment.
